need help with short tails
i hunt in the sierra nevadas of eastern central cali. we have everything from rolling foothills covered in oak too the thickest brush you ever seen at about 4000 ft too pine tree covered mountains at 8000 ft. seems like most of the bobs are at the 2000 to 5000 ft elevation level. however, this year has been a drout too say the least. hunting lower has shown me luck in the past but its just so dog on dry and warm this winter im havin a hard time. i know most people who run bobs hunt in the snow but the snow line right now is all the way up in the high country and i just dont think theres a lot of bobs up there that high. any one got some advice on specifically where too hunt elevation wise and things like next to creeks and stuff like that. also what time off day? iv had most of my luck in the late morning and afternoon but iv heard everything under the sun on the question. also need help on techniques. roadin works but theres so much trash, the roades are covered with every track known to man kind. around here i end up with a bunch of races and no catch then stratching my head the rest of the day. visuals are great but are far and few between, and i dont exactly have strike dogs just yet. any advice would be greatly appriciaited!

If you're worried about running trash if you road dogs, then you definitely need to break them better. I would say use one, maybe 2 dogs max. Get them cleaned up and hunt. I would also pay attention to cat sign (poop) and try to start tracks there.

Try up high, I see cat tracks on the ridges at 7-8k.

reeeeeaaally, i just might have to take a drive to the high country this weekend. there will be a LOT less trash up there this time of year too

I lived in Tulare when I was a kid for quite awhile, but my favorite hunting spot was just above you at Cherry Gap.Take Cobalts advice,as far as elevation--it makes no difference as long as there is habitat and feed for them they'll be there.I hunt snow maybe 4-8 times a year, the rest is on bare ground---wet,dry.Today I hunted in the pouring down rain seen a cat cross the road as I was collaring dogs[doesn't happen very often].If you get your dogs on straight Bobcat you'll find you have less trash trouble compared to other game and not bouncing them from one critter to the other saves alot of confusion.Hope this helps, good luck--there are some really good cat hunters down their in your area.
