Lion Hunting Plotts?

How many of you guys are using Plotts for lion hunting? I'm trying to convince my father-in-law that we need to get a couple of Plotts for chasing lions around the ranch in Montana. It seems like Walkers are the standard hound around there, but I'm getting an affinity for the Plott Hound based on what I've read.

If you use Plotts or know of anybody that does I'd love to hear about your experiences. I'd love to see photos of your Plotts if you're willing to share. I certainly appreciate any info you're willing to share.

on my post and video you can see a red kamphouse plott bayin a cat he runs silent til jumped but seems to have decent nose

Might depend on the type of conditions your hunting in. Snow, bare ground, dry ground, etc. I don't know of too many guys catching lion on dry ground with plotts. Maybe they are and you just don't hear about it. Dry ground in New Mexico and Arizona seems to lean toward walker, blue tick, red tick, and variations thereof. Montana is no doubt different. I have a blue tick/plott cross from Van Johnson that does ok on dry ground. Don't have much snow to hunt on, unfortunately. Anyway, input from plott guys would be interesting.

I can catch lions with or with out snow with my Plotts. They are not the best but they do a very good job. I prefer to hunt with out snow. Snow is cold and hard to walk in. I will take dry any day, but it is harder to find a cat to run.
My son has a real good walker also.

Lion hunting in Montana is almost always with snow. When the lion hound season starts there's usually quite a bit of snow on the ground. This year has been really mild and snowpack in a lot of the state is lower than normal.

I really appreciate everybody's input. I'm learning a lot.

I know of 3-4 Plotts all owned by the same guy that were good lion dogs in the snow and dirt. They weren't the best lion dogs I have seen but I would have been proud to own any of them

I normally stay away from these type of posts but can't resist it, let me start off I am by no means a dirt lion hunter but on occasion I "try" to run em without snow, I own 90% plotts all out ofthe late Greg Anderson lines and they will cold trail pretty damn good. I caught a nice tom this year ran him 5 miles 2 on 100% dry rocky country 3 miles on crusty patchy snow, was able to watch the dogs thru binos at 900 yards and they were grubbin that shell rock and bare ground after watching for an hour they lined that sucker out and had him jumped and caught, so yes plotts can do it on dirt. I think plotts get a bad wrap on dirt because they simply aren't given the opprotunity I would bet for every 500 walkers, blueticks redticks or whatever breed there is one plott given the opprotunity to be a dry ground dog maybe I'm wrong but that's my opinion.that being said I have seen my dogs cold trail bear with some of the best cold nosed dogs around, like the saying different strokes for different folks hope that helps
