Re: getting caught by FWP
I hunted in CA. for about ten years from the late 80's through most of the 90's. There were 4-5 of us houndsmen that ran together. Our warden was very appreciative of what we were doing and he told us so. We kept the pressure on all his problem bears for him and were actually helping him out and he knew it. In ten years, I was never once stopped or checked while running dogs.
We do have one warden around here that I don't want to have anything to do with. So I do understand what some of you guys are saying. He is one of those that treats every hunter as an outlaw. But most of the others treat everyone the way they should.
So who's more at fault here, the houndsmen that treats all the wardens in the same boat or the wardens that are doing the same to the houndsmen. I think if I were in some of your guys shoes, I'd take the lead and call some of your local wardens and talk to them. Let them know what has happened in the past and I'd bet the next time that guy stops you, it might be a different outcome.
What types of things are these wardens thinking you're all doing wrong? Other then your dogs ending up on some private, what in the world do they think you're all doing wrong?

Re: getting caught by FWP
gay name for a dog. just sayin..... the general attitude of our officers here is show me a houndsman and I'll show you somone breaking the law. there are a few that do a very good job sniffing out the bad guys while managing to treat you like a human being instead of a criminal. I usually study the proclamation to the point where I can explain the laws to them. and I think if you are roading your beardogs where bears live you are just hunting bears. nuff said.
"Houndn'Ems Blueticks" if it smells like a cat, they'll catch it.

X2,
I'm sure a guy can find plenty of places to road or exercise dogs where the chances of running a bear are slim to none. Also, most guys don't take their buddy's to road dogs. Don't take a crime scene investigator to figure this one out.
That being said, aint no way I'm ever going to call a warden to tell him I'm roading dogs, camping, hunting or anything else.....I don't need their permission.
The problem we have around here is checker board sections of tribal land that border forest and private land. Years back my work brought me into contact with some of the tribal wardens. While talking with one of them I asked him what would be the best advise in handling a situation where dogs trailed onto tribal land. I asked him if there was a contact person I should call in order to get permission to retrieve them. He smugly replied that they would just shoot my dogs! Being how I was on the job I just bit my tongue, however I made my mind up then and there that if I ever find myself in that situation that I will take my chances an retrieve my dogs myself. Same goes for the state boys....

Re: getting caught by FWP
Well, maybe it is different for you guys that hunt with buddies or have wives and friends that know where you hunt, camp, ect. I am single and hunt alone. I let the wardens know where I am and keep in touch with them so if anything happens to me someone will know. They have pulled me out of ditches and have even come help me change a blown out tire. You guys can bad mouth and not trust them as much as you want, but when it comes down to it I will trust and depend on the wardens to be there if something goes terribly wrong. They are the only friends I have for the most part. As far as my pups name it is in honor of the friends I know will always be there.

Back to the original post.
Ok I have buddies that live and hunt in Montana, and they tell me that they can road there hounds in the off season, or be coon hunting and if the dogs break on a bear and tree's it they have to go retrieve there dogs can can not gloat or take pictures and its not illegal as long as they can prove they didnt intentially turn down on the bear. Game wardens have beaten them to the tree several times and as long as your not praising your hounds for treeing it the wardens give you a warning. The warden even asked if they were going to beat there hounds for chasing the bear and by buddy replied we dont hit our hounds. They have never recieved a ticket for accidently treeing a bear, becouse there is a differance between exercising your dogs and looking for trouble.

Re: getting caught by FWP
I think this thread pretty much proves why houndsmen are treated the way they are.
