False treeing
Tried coon hunting for my first time a couple months back with my cat dogs and boy did we suck. I have 3 finished cat dogs and they would trail and tree and every tree I got to has no coon in it. Wat could be goin on, these dogs can put up bobs all day long but can't tree a coon. Are they smelling den trees and just assuming or what?

Re: False treeing
too much scent.Whip their asses and send them on.when they finally get it right shoot it out.Pretty soon they will be checking themselves better. It has been tough for a while tho too.Coon should be starting to move a little better now too.One other thing you say "are they smelling den trees, and just assuming...." If they are treeing on legitimate den trees then unless you know for a fact,no ones home you have to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Re: False treeing
In my experience a dog that slick tree's does it all the time on random tree's. Example you turn loose on a track and one of your hounds hang up and tree right off the road and none of the other dogs want to tree. or the rest of the hounds keep trailing. If all three of your hounds are treeing and are convinced that they are treed and your not finding game I would look at the cercomstances. Are you hunting urly or late? are the hounds cold trailing and then all of a suuden start treeing? How do you hunt? do you cast out? road your dogs or hunt from the rig?
Try doing something differant, your hounds might be back tracking. If so they probably are finding dens. Its hard to believe all your hounds false tree that bad if they have no problem treeing Bobs. If you can check your tracks, look carefully at the tree's and look for sign. Coon dens in my neck of the woods are cedar tree's 99% of the time with scratch marks up and down them. We find shells and coon scat under them.
If your convinced they are tree'ing dens then dont praise them just leash up and look for another race. I practically ruined a hound not being aware he was back tracking and treeing dens and we shined a coon in the den and shot it out. He forever back tracked till the day he died. Over 50% of his races went backwards from then on and he got really good at finding the dens. Some times we would find coons in the dens most of the time we didnt.
If your sure your not back tracking then start hunting at a differnat time becouse the coons your hunting have allready fed and are asleep in the den by the time your hounds get to the tree. Coons will tree with very little preasure 90% of the time.
I hope my insight has helped

Re: False treeing
My opinion cat dogs normally run little sent from a bobcat then u turn around and dump out on a coon theres a ton of scent and they may be taking it backwards to the last tree that it had been in earlier seen it happen before

Re: False treeing
I'm walk in em next to the river in some of the thickest stuff known to man, they'll always find a track no problem at night time, start trailing and moving a track and 5-20 minutes later they'll start treeing. Every time I get there it's always gotta be the thickest tree down there but I can never find a coon in em.....one thing I have noticed is every single tree down there connects to another tree or a bushel of trees. I didn't know if coons would try and outsmart dogs and climb down another tree but something is happening. It's happened 3 times now, I don't understand what's goin on these dogs have seen tons and tons of game and hunted at night plenty of times on bobs. The only thing I can come up with is they ran it backwards all 3 times like u guys say.
Re: False treeing
I recently asked a couple of my buddies if they ever had dogs trail a coon backwards...they never had...I never had any do it...bear and lion are a different story! This is the first time I ever heard of dogs running coon backwards...interesting.
when in doubt turn em out
Re: False treeing
i had my little walker dog start slick treeing on me at this one paticular spot and i couldn't figure out what was wrong because she never lied . then one night i figured it out when i seen it . she was treeing on a couple ringtail cats that had moved in . when they tree they run through the tops like squirrels and she couldn't see em leave at night . she would work squirrels in the day by following them tree to tree but at night them little cats was killin us . i finally got both of them a male and female one night they slipped up . and all went back to normal . don't know if they are in your area but they will give you fits .
