Couple of lion questions?

FYI you can sex a track without anything to compare it to. not saying that you could tell how big it was, but you could sex it . the shape of a females toes are pointed. toms toes are round to oval. also females toes are more diomond shaped and offset like a k-9. toms toes are all out front more perfectly round. pay attention for the next 20 or so turnouts and tell me if you disagree. size is usually a dead give away, but there are other ways to tell. I'm very surprised after seeing the track pic and the live pic that it is not a female. but toms do look different in their subadult form. if that's a tom it's not very old. all this is just my opinion for what it's worth, which aint much. but I have seen a cat or two in my day

So u are saying you can tell the difference from a pic, but if you had to have guessed you would have been wrong...ok.

I can tell what i'm turning out on if I'm looking at the track in person 99% of the time, but a picture on the net, like you said, you would have guessed wrong...

He would be wrong only if it is actually a male. My money goes on female. I know some folks say they treed it and it was a tom, but if the opportunity ever presented itself I would put big money on it as a female. Mostly for reason already mentioned by other guys.

it's getting deep now! My money goes on all of you are proving my point. You all think you know what it is but the guy that claims to have caught and recognize the ear notch, he's probably wrong cause you are looking at a pic on the net and you can tell so much more from that, ha ha!!!! I'd love to see how well you guys that claim to know what yer lookin at would do if a bunch of random lion tree pics were thrown up with the sex already known, I bet you would guess less than 50% correct tom/female. Funny part about this place is someone could throw up a picture of a skunk and some know it all ego duech would try to turn it into a woverine.

I must not have been clear in my original post. The picture of the track posted earlier was one i found on the same day I found the deer had been moved, in a separate canyon several miles away from where i got pictures of the cat. In all possibillity it could have been another cat. The only reason i have to believe that the cat in the pics is a male is that hound_crazy recognized it as one he had treed a few weeks earlier.

These are a couple of the tracks I got later at the scene of the deer carcass. Kind of old. Same cat?

I just purchased 8 lion carcasses/hides from our DNR two weeks ago. They were all tagged and had the sex, and other info listed on a spec sheet. Three of the eight were incorrectly sexed. I had my local warden over and showed him so he could correct thier records.
I thought everone knew you could sex a cat by his toes. It's pretty acurate. I had one this year that turned out to be a young tom that we thought was a female.

I am not saying I know what it is. I just told you what my first guess would be. The picture of the track is not clear enough for me to want to bet. Larry, if you can't tell a big tom track from a female track from a picture, you had better get out there and study what you are doing. I can say for certain in some cases you can be sure it is a tom track from a picture. If you want to argue just say so and I will will leave you to do that.

I've got no plans to kill this guy (if it is a guy). I like having lion up here in my backyard. It would have to be a very big tom, for me to even consider harvesting anytime soon. Luckily there are a few houndsman out here who think similiarly. Hound_crazy had this one in a tree and let em go to grow another day.
