hound off feed- yearly occurrance

my walker/trigg hound is now four, every summer she goes through a period where she doesn't eat and then eats less for a time. Near as I can figure without documenting is it coincides with our hotter more humid days. Some times happens in the fall as well. Some Summers she may end up not eating 7-10 days worth of food. Two or three days of not eating, then half a bowl, then some of the bowl, then a whole bowl, then nothing for a day or two etc. Not sick, just sensitive to the changes in weather I guess. Active and alert otherwise and it happens every year. Anyone else have a hound that does this. Paul Conway

yes we do a 9 year old redtick female this year it has gotten so bad she went to the vet ...we like you thought it was just the heat...the vet did some test and said we should have her spaded this might help since she only has been able to be breed once, and her female parts might be hindering her.
Since I m not a vet i will take his word for it and in 2 weeks she will be spayed.

A few of my dogs have been doing the same thing here lately. In the winter it takes more calories to maintain that core body temp.

Easttenngator, did your hound give any indication of being sick otherwise?

Also, between us we've only had a handful of blueticks, but it seems like it takes a bunch more feed to keep weight on them than it does our walkers, even the smaller bluetick I have. Paul Conway

it can get 100 degrees here in the day and i feed at night when the sun goes down around 8-9 and never noy have one eat all their food. but when i would feed in the morning they seemed to only eat half and eat the other half at night ?? in the morning it was all gone

have had lots of foxhounds that were very picky

I leave hers out if she doesn't eat it. Only change it if it rains as I don't want it wet and sittin in the heat and still she doesn't eat it. She down three bowls compared to the other hounds over the last two weeks, but finally back to eating each night. I don't really worry about it as long as she's looking fine. I did take her temp a few years ago but after normal readings I stopped doing it. Would if there were other signs, but it just seems to be the weather. Paul Conway.

Paul...small blood inn stool is about it...this year we have gone to mixing wet and dry feed that is helping.

As for the blueticks I have 3 grown ones and yes they are harder to get weight on ...maybe not harder but takes more feed ...what i have done is put them on auto feeder until back into shape then back to being fed once a day. And this has worked really well

Such is typical of many hounds in hot weather. Feed them at night.

I have not noticed it down here in AZ. He eats dry dog food once in the morning once at night the same amount everyday. With temps hovering around 100+ I have noticed he will sleep most if not all day while being very active in the early morning and after the sun goes down.

My dogs have been doin the same. I try to feed them twice a day, but lately they have only been eating in the evening. But they usually rotate. One won't eat one morning then it's a different one that won't eat the next morning. They all seem to eat at night though. I figured that it would be the other way around. In the morning in town here it often won't go below 90, but at night when they do eat it's still 100-105 outside, but that's when they eat. I guess my dogs are a$$ backwards.
