In my opinion you start training a pup from day one fist thing for me is manners and obedience tranning. it will make things much more enjoyable. and as far as trash breaking a puppy i would not worrie to much about breaking em off any thing before they know what good game is. you need to build confidence in the dog so setting it up to fail is a bad deal. so get the dog handling well and buy a dog that knows what it is doing or ride along with some one that has good dogs. the best adivse i ever got was keep your dog in the woods as much as possible and its true. the more you hunt that dog the faster things will fall in to place for you. im no pro or even close but i have learned on my own. its a rough road. and another thing talk to guys in your area pick their brain usually guys will lend some advise good luck to you.

Where are you from? Like shawn said work on your handle every day, and don't worry about trash until they know good game or you might ruin them.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the info. I know that it will be a long road but how bad can it be when you are in the woods. It will be a good challenge. I am in the central oregon area. If there is anything else please feel free to let me know, you can never have too much info.

Build a bond with your pups, play with them every day, make it fun for them so they look up to you as the pack leader. The stronger your bond to your pup the easier it is to handle in the woods, they will want to work harder for you because they want to please you. The more praise you give them early on the more excited they will get as they do the right thing, they read your body language and sense when they are doing the right thing. It makes it that much easier to break them off trash when they get older and start running in the woods. Create drags that are easy for them to follow (short runs) as they are trailing them praise them the entire way, as they get older and are ready for more, turn the drags into scent trails, instead of having the scent drug all over the ground, use the end of a small paint roller ( size of a cat track) and touch it to the ground every ten to twenty inches, that way they are working hard to find the scent, this will also teach them to slow down and work the track. Hope that gets you started, now I am out the door to do just that with two new pups from Utah.

Get the kids out there with you as often as you can, this day and age they can be so influenced by social media it is scary.
