Lion Hunting Plotts?
Re: Lion Hunting Plotts?
I hunted with Cap Atwood in 69' and 70' he had all types of dogs but his Plotts were the best out of old Sarge they cold cold trail and out think any hound. I tried some Plotts out here for bear but they were different dogs, bred for grit[ what every that is] all that I could see that they were good for was dog fighting, we had a lot of vet bills mostly from each other. interesting contribution to the thread. Seems 90% of dog fight problems originate from the handlers lack of ability, just sayin. Grit is what makes the difference when nothing else will.

You are probably right about the gritt when it comes to bear, but I would have to disagree with the 90% of fight problems originating from the handlers lack of ability. Not saying the handler does not play a role, just believe some lines are inherently more prone to this type of behavior. It is a trait that can and does get passed down through breeding, I have seen it.
As far as plotts go, I have hunted around and with some top notch lion and bobcat dogs from the mid 80's to mid 90's and they were all plotts. These dogs were mainly Gordon Pace and Olen Greer breeding so maybe I just got spoiled.
Re: Lion Hunting Plotts?
I would think a lot of dog fighters are caused by handlers for sure but also could be a genetic thing without a doubt, but I have seen just as many and probably more dog fighters out of other breeds then plotts, but back to post plotts can make Hell of lion dogs I know mine have performed really well better on the snow but on same hand that's what I hunt mostly

Yard Dog, Olen and Gordon were two pretty cool old guys they did truely have some nice plotts I was around them in the 80s and they sure had some great stories to share. Andy
The home of TOPPER AGAIN bred biggame hounds.
