Running DOGS NOSE POWER

Post by al baldwin »

Do running dogs on average have as good or better nose power than tree bred dogs?. Just a honest question. I have not had enought experience with runnig dogs to have an educated opinion Thanks Al Baldwin

Al,
Just my opinion, but yes, I think some running dogs (out of running dogs that produces cold trailing dogs) are as cold nose as most of the treeing bred dogs and maybe colder nose than some of your treeing bred dogs.

But I guess that really isn't a fare answer because I'm like you. I have always been around running dog and running dog crosses but haven't seen many straight treeing dog in this area. Robbie

Mr. Al,

We too agree with Mr. Robbie (South Texan) the right Bred Running Hounds (some Strains have been bred for different skill sets as they are used for different things and do NOT have enough Nose) will have as good a COLD NOSE as the Tree Bred Hounds.

In the South Texas Country where South Texan Hunts it is DRY almost all the time, they have to have Hounds who can "Do a Lot" with very little Scent.

These running Hounds with Noses then use the BRAIN thing to know how to move a Track and search properly and effeciently for where the Track has gone. Noses without that BRAIN are pretty useless and can Hurt more than Help!

Going back and reading David's 2 page Post on the differences in the Running/Tree Hounds style is as good of an explanation as you will find.

Al running dogs are just like the tree dogs some have good noses some don't. I think people forget that the tree dogs are just culls from the running dogs. It is just how they are breed after we decided to make tree dogs out of them. Dewey

I tend to agree with my buddy, South Texas when you compare the running dogs of today to the competition style treeing dogs. Let's face it, the competition hunters don't want a hound to cold trail and "waste" time as they are all about hitting as many trees as possible. Let me make my position very clear, I am not a fan of the competition hound and don't like the qualities that those folks breed.
After saying this, I do not think that the running dogs have the cold noses of some of the hounds that have been bred for that trait for many generations. I will concede that just because a hound has a cold nose does not mean that the dog is going to catch more game, but what the heck do I know?
Adios,
Gary
