It is time for Richards to fall on his sword. With the introduction of S.B. 1221, a proposed ban on bear and bobcat hunting with hounds, being the direct result of Richards' Idaho lion hunt photo he has done great harm all California hunters. It is probably to late to make a deal: Richards resigns and the bill gets pulled before a committee vote so we will have to fight it. They will keep me and my black and tans out of the woods when they pry the leashes from my cold, dead hand. -Pete

Do you really believe HSUS's public statement on their reasoning for going after bear and bobcat hunting with hounds? Fact of the matter is HSUS is firmly opposed to any hunting, but especially our way of hunting. They are just using this as an excuse to go on the attack again. Houndsmen as a group are seen as a minority in the hunting community, with limited funds to protect ourselves, relative to others. It's also easy to twist public perception against us because of the public's lack of understanding of hunting with hounds (easy to twist it as inhumane treatment of game and "pets" when that is really farthest from the truth). Bottom line is, if it wasn't Richards, it would be something else that HSUS would use as a reason to go after us again. Compromise and placating just won't work.

In all honesty, I am not up to speed on Richards' overall performance as head of the F&G commission, but I do like having folks who actually hunt and fish, representing us on the commission. I don't think what Richards did in Idaho is wrong or should be used as a political tool to remove a conservative from the committee. It's all politics that's getting in the way of managing our wildlife resources for the public good.
