Ticks
Ticks
Anyone use the tags we put in cattles ears for ticks and flies on their dogs? I was in SC last week and a couple guys sweared by it I just used zip ties to attach to dogs collars. I pulled 20+ ticks off me and none of my dogs, I was in the woods a lot more then them.

Re: Ticks
Sorry for stealing ur post but has anyone ever tried giving dogs garlic for tick control. One garlic pill in their food or grate some off of a clove into the food.
It's getting to be you need a second job to pay for front line or similar..
Or any other home remedy that actually works.

Do you happen do know the ingredients in these tags? Any known side effects? How long they last? Would appreciate any info.. Sounds like a good deal.

I can't remember if I read this in a book or someone gave it to me, I didn't come up with this but it works great.
4 ounces of permethrin
24 ounce bottle of baby oil
Dump out 4 ounces of baby oil and put in the permethrin. Use a 3 cc syringe without needle and apply the same as frontline along the spine. It works for mosquitos, ticks, flies, and fleas. You have to shake the bottle each time you use it as it does settle. With as many dogs as I have this works great. The cow ear tags would work to I believe but I have my dogs free roaming so they would end up pulling them off each other while wrestling around.

It's nasty stuff.........a neurotoxin linked to cancer and parkinson's disease in humans. Being mammals, dogs are at risk for the same, just like us. Your kid pets your dog and then picks his nose, or eats something, and injests it. Gets rubbed off onto your clothing, leashes, collars, etc, and then you injest it. It will find a way into your system somehow.
Approved for use on pets and cattle?, hummm. That doesn't make it *OK* and *safe* in my books. Asbestos wasn't *known* to be a risk to us at one time either. Ditto for mercury, herbacides, ddt, acetone, etc, etc.......
For alleviating just the hassle of pulling ticks from dogs, I know I wouldn't use it. If ticks carrying Lyme's were prevalent in an area.............well then it's a tough call......risk of poison vs risk of lymes........

Re: Ticks
Mondo, the main ingredient is Permethrin, which is what is used in some of the tick products for dogs (same as what Spoke posted the link to). The package does tell you to be sure to wash hands and don't get it in your eyes/mouth (when handling), but I'm pretty sure all the tick products for dogs do also. I put a tag on this time of the year and usually replace it between training and kill season, just to be safe (don't know if I'd need to switch them or not).
I figure if they say they are safe for calves they should be safe for adult dogs also. And they are the right price for my cheap a$$
.
Just my opinion, so take that for what it's worth....
