Sick dog

Post by Wyo Hunter »

I have a year and a half old bluetick female. Went out this last friday to run her and keep her in shape for hunting season. She struck on a farrel cat after i cought up with her she had bayed the cat up and i watched the cat bit her a few times before i could get a shot and kill the cat. Now she is swollen in the area she was bitten and can barely walk. If you try and pick her up she bites and bays. Any advice she up to date on shots as of feb. Thanks

Pump her full of antibiotics quick, cats have nasty bites that are prone to infections.

I agree with timbuk3. I use cephalexin. Get 20 pills from the vet and give twice a day for ten days. Also with the swelling they say warm compresses help.

I'd use clavamox. It is expensive, but is broad spectrum. It doesn't seem to have the potential for side effects like cephalexin. Amoxicillin alone isn't strong enough for a cat bite. I can't stress enough how filthy cat bites are.

Yes, you have nailed it. Clavulin IS a required abx for feline bites / scratches.
Felines carry Pasturella Multicida, and many antibiotics won't touch it. Clavamox is one that will.

The dog is doing alot better. I got the vet to switch her over to clavamox, and he tapped the swollen area and drained enuff fluid to fill a coffe mug. Thanks for the help. I'm just shocked how fast her decline was, she was almost helpless in around twelve hours.
