Ego, humble modest

Post by dwalton »

These words seem to come on the bobcat section. I looked them up today to see what I was missing. Ego The individual as aware of himself. humble Having awareness of one's defects, modest. lowly;unpretentious. Modest not vain, shy; reserved. OK so whats the point? Dewey

Dewey looked up humble heres what I found. 1. not proud or arrogant, modest. Nothing to be proud or arrogant about when hounds lose a cat. Try not to get arrogant if gone thru a good stretch when hounds caught several in a row. However when I was young sometimes found it hard not to start thinking those hounds had those bobs all figured out. But sure got humbled again by the right cat. Of course I was always looking for hounds that gave ( maybe to much track mouth) not that I always had those type) Just my experience. Don/t know what the point means? Thanks Al Baldwin

I think a lot of you are missing the point to some of Deweys posts. I don't know Dewey from Adam but I think he's trying to get people to push the limits or maybe at least try something new to get a better dog. You don't have to learn anything but just get a thought process going in which you might push yourself or your dogs to be better. Yeah, it comes across as an ego trip but I try to read between the lines. I'm not jumping on Deweys band wagon, I believe some comments go too far also, but it still makes me think "what if".
Lets keep this bobcat section going in a positive direction and leave the negative comments out. Everyday I can't wait to check out this section and this is the kind of stuff I don't want to read about. Take what you want out of a post and leave the rest..period.

it's not fair to point the finger at just one. i had mentioned this a few days ago and it got deleted. just like this one probably will. the good thing is usually in these types of circles cannibalize when it's only them left to tell one an other how great they are. at least george can take a poke in the ribs once in a while with out crying, and al seems to be just a plain and simple good person. now you can delete this, but i will always call um like i see um

x3. I dont hunt bobcats, but this is the section I always go to first, there is far less sniveling, and whining. The posts have something that we all can learn from, without taking a verbal backhand from some A- hole that has nothing better to do than create problems. Please keep it that way. Tim.

Rodney: Thanks for the reply. I don't mean to talk down to anyone, that is not my intent.I feel there are a lot of hunters that know far more than I and I have yet to find someone that I could not learn from. I do overstate at times to make a point. The problem that I see is that no matter what or where you look people in this world have it that they know how it is. Look at our government and what they are doing to take care of us. I seen a stile of dogs that work very well for cats years ago. It took me years to find and see why they are better for me in catching cats. A lot of the folk lore that people know about dogs and cat hunting is all made up as to what they see or think can be done. How smart the cats are, how hard they are to catch and what it is to cold trail.... People that have never hunted with a pack of strait bobcat dogs trained by a knowledgeable hunter do not realize what is possible. I try to post in my opinion to not offend people, because what ever I say is my opinion. I have been able to spend a lot of time hunting more than most of you and have always shared what I have learned to others. The one thing that has always bother me is how the trappers get the rap for no cats. I hunt during the season where most people don't, I hunt hard and depend on the money I make to live on. It has been years seen I saw a trap in the woods. The hound men have wanted to limit the take of western Oregon bobcats from the mid '70 because of low cat numbers every time the cat prices go up. I don't agree with this. I have a biologist working with me to show the amount of cats killed by trappers and hound men and how it relates to density of cats killed per square mile. I will post or have that at the state meeting next Saturday. In most counties more have been killed by hounds that traps. Facts for some counties, Douglas 51 hunters killed 167 cats,36 trappers 148, Curry 3 hunters killed 25 1 trapper 5.Lane 39 hunters 116 , 40 trappers 94 cats. In what ever I have done I have always wanted to be good at it and work hard at that because of my drive. I have always invited people to come and hunt with me. In most cases I will not run my dogs with others. I saw a very good dog killed in a fight at a early time in my hunting. The problems that are cause by dogs hunting together are not worth it. I get young dogs from different breeding every year looking to find something better. If you have a chance come hunt with me, I don't have the best dogs or catch the most cats, I just do what I do and I take pride in what I do with dogs. Most of the top cat hunters don't post on here from the Northwest and they are some really good ones out there. If I have offended anyone I apologize but remember nothing I say can offend you that comes from within. Dewey

  Mr Walton, another question...... that starts discussion.........
As Thunt and mondo I also enjoy this section, more talk about tracking, dog work, training that can be applied to hunting all sorts of game, often started by a ''dewie'' question.
Cat hunting seems to be so different from one area to another and have several schools of thought.
We still had the ''dewie'' questions when others had stopped posting here..........Thanks.

I am not sure what Deweys intentions were with this post. I would be willing to leave it alone even though Oneguy828 got pretty brutal. I think everyone is a little quick to call Deweys posts an attempt to boost his own ego, even though some of his "pot stirring" is to promote thought. I think most of our posts can be taken as the reader wants to see it, and a lot of folks on here are very skeptical.

oneguy828 wrote: either way i am done posting on here. I am more interested in learning then telling people what i know, even if it is very little .

I am not sure what that accomplishes. I am not out to defend Dewey at all. But I can say at least he participates. This isn't Deweys section, it isn't mine and it isn't any other one person or group. It is what the people posting want to make it. There are some guys on here that have prompted some really good conversations even though they haven't been at the hound game very long. I am not sure how long he has had hounds so I hope he doesn't take this as an insult but Unreal_tk gets the good topic award for the last month or so. He sure does a good job promoting good discussions.

pisses me off about these boards is that when you have someone who is actually sharing real knowledge some boneheads decide to shut him up.......usually under the pretense that he has to much pride or ego or somthin.....

must be you alls puritan roots or watching to much little house growing up.

Aww thanks George.

Lets get back to the topic at hand shall we. I think what Dewey is getting at is there is several different types of individuals here, with many different perspectives. And that everyone has to get along in one manner or another. I could be wrong but that's what I think.

1st. Thanks Mr. Dewey for all your Wisdom and Experience shared with others here on Big Game Houndsmen!

2nd. This Thread should show that presented PROPERLY dissenting opinions are not only tolerated but encouraged!

Now back to Mr. Dewey, there are only a very few of us who get to Hunt Bobcats for a living…Mr. Dewey for money…me for my Dad as he can not by himself anymore. We are both very Blessed for this privilege! If He and I come across too STRONG sometimes, Please forgive us…we are TRULY trying to HELP others.

Horsur…Thanks very much for your POST. Ker_man you too have KEEN insight into what goes on here on BGH. You are right Mr. Dewey stayed the course when I and others took my/our toys and went home when my/our Skin should have been thicker!

T.Hunt, the Bobcat section leaders will work hard to keep this Forum headed in the right direction. Thanks for participating!

Rodney Smith, Thanks very much for Posting in a courteous manner; Getting your point across with out Casting Stones and belittling and demeaning anyone.

Lyinhunter, Sorry to disappoint you by not deleting your Post or moving this to the CAGE. While I hope that this kind of Thread occurs very seldom, this is the manner in which it should be done. I think that you can see that while you are offended by Someone others are not and feel that they are LEARNING.

Now for all of you Guest who read this, and the Members who do not Post much. JUMP in the water will not get TOO HOT! As DAVID has said (sure miss him and hope to hear from and see him back on here soon) there is more Bobcat Hunting Knowledge stored in the BGH Archives than anywhere in recorded History….and Folks there is Lots more to be gleamed from ALL of YOU!

I know alot of you already know this but I always think about it as my Mom told me this when I was just a tiny little guy. What is dog spelled backwards? Lets all take a deep breath and say our thanks for just being able to enjoy our dog or dogs and our fellow houndsmen weather we agree or not as long as we can enjoy our hounds and learn a few things along the way, life is pretty dang good!
