not quite finished

Post by coastrangecathunting »

for u guys that wont feed a dog that dosnt do it all from truck to tree . what do u guys do with your so called culls . there are alot of good qualitys a dog may have but not do it all from truck to tree. i will give some examples.

dog 1 , frosty. she will coldtrail , great on the jump , easy keeper , broke for the most part . wont start trash but if another dog starts a coyote she will go aswell. quiet in the kennel , minds like a cowdog.
she wont rig unless its smoking hot , she wont tree unless she can see it. doesnt wonder at the tree .

dog 2 , silent on track untill jumped , good locate tree dog, minds like a cowdog. broke as they come, good check dog, queit in the kennel, easy keeper.
wont rig unless its smoking hot, will coldtrail but dont bark unless jumped,.

dog 3 , coldtrails good but is a little sticky, trees ok , minds good ,rigs medium tracks, broke about like dog one.
not as fast as dog 1 or 2 , not the best locate dog, needs to shut up and go to the other dogs sometimes.

these dogs will start run and put cats up a tree but are not what i would call finished catdogs. what would u do with these dogs . they bring something to the table but have holes in there game.these dogs range from 3yrs old to 5yrs old.

JC: To the guys that are looking for the perfect cat dog these are probably better than anything they own. They just don't know it. These dogs have a place for someone and will catch cats. The only difference in what people want is matching the dog to the person. A good cat hunter could take these dogs any one and build a pack around it or tree cats by its self if they understood the dog. If you are looking for the perfect cat dog maybe you would cull them. I am not, how about you? Dewey

I don't know nothing but as long as you hunt snow like I do those dogs would do fine it sounds like except maybe the non treer but if it isn't leaving it isn't harming as long as you pair it with a good tree dog. But in your world you guys run more dogs, so I don't see a issue unless you didn't have a rig dog(the way you start). But I could be wrong.

I have one dog that isn't a great single dog but she shines on a jump or a tricky rockpile cat. Silent trail by herself, only runs hot to medium tracks by herself (slowly at that!), isn't the best locator but trees good. But if I pair her with one of my two aces as I call em, they seem to catch fairly quickly. I wouldn't call her a cull but she isn't a ace but rather a jack in my eyes. Damn sure would of had cats get away without her.

Providing I was one of those guys, which I'm not, I'd keep them and hunt them until I found one, or some, I liked better. Then I'd probably sell them letting the buyer know exactly what he was getting. Otherwise I'd treat them like what I have now and enjoy them for what they are but always be on the lookout for something better.

As long as the owner likes them and they work for them thats all that matters. I can get along with a hotter nosed dog and also one that doesnt open alot on the track but if they do not locate and tree I have no use for them. jmo Andy

JC DOG # 2 SOUNDS LIKE A DOG THAT I WOULD NOT MIND IN MY PACK. BUT I WOULD ONLY WANT ONE OF THEM. NOT MY IDEA DOG, BUT OWNED ONE VERY SIMULAR THAT SURE CAUGHT SOME TOUGH CAT . AND SHE WAS SURE A SLASHER ON A RUNNING CAT. pROBLEM WAS IF SHE GOT A LOOSE, COULD SURE BECOME A ONE DOG RACE AT TIMES. TRAVELED IN HIGH GEAR WITHOUT BARKING UNTIL SHE WAS ON TOP OF THE CAT AGAIN. SHE CONVINCED ME SILENT TRAILERS DON/T MAKE MUCH DIFFERENCE ON SOME CATS. MAYBE I/M ALL WET? THANKS Al

JC--I got some trading material here.
dog 1.good as they get would be a $5000 dog if it had all her legs, contributes well.
dog 2.good started dog gets around good, awesome voice,3 toes on 1 foot 5toes on rest
dog 3.pink in color and double dew clawed on every leg--trees good.
I'll trade these for dogs 1 and 2 plus a little cash??????
Dude I'm flicking you crap, you know what I think----if they're a contribution to consistantly catching a cat and the guy likes them who is hunting them, everyone has opinions and ideas, but despite all of these. It's plain hard to argue with consistantly putting game up the wood!!Weekend hunters who tree 30 plus cat a year[in our part of the world]and the guys who really hunt alot that catch 50 plus cat ayear.I feel might have something I'd be interested in looking at,if they make a cross.Due to the fact that they probably are reading dogs well and are hard hunters, even if we differ on ideas or styles of dogs. For others reading this post, the numbers above are not set in stone just a gauge of sorts.

thanks for all the replies. i keep these types of dogs because they are not good enough to sell and are to good to cull if that makes sence. they dont mess nothing up and actually help tree cats. counting 2 pups under 5 months old i have 10 dogs. i can catch cats consistantly with 4. so why so many , they are to good to cull and not good enough to sell. . i just got in from exercising 8 of them and i half to get up in less than 2 hours to go to work, yippy fricken skippy. warner tell your dad sorry for trespassing . :D

JC,

The Hounds you describe are what South Texan, the VA Cat hunters, and us put together to make the TEAM that we find that it takes to catch a Cat.

Dad has been Cat Hunting now 54 years, Breeding his Hounds for 44 years, and has never bred a PERFECT Hound, all have a weak spot some where. Yet combined into the Team lots of Cat have crossed the River Styx!

Mr. Dewey hits very close to the Head of the Nail when he says that a Good Houndsman can take these Hounds and blend them into a Cat Catching Team. Being a Good Houndsman/Coach takes Talent Evaluation to a new level. Taking what you have and blending it into something effective is much more fullfilling than spending BIG BUCKS on a set of Hounds that may or maynot continue to perform for a new owner as well as for a selling owner.

Last night in Virginia, I watched a nice pack (6) of Cat/Fox Hounds do a nice job on a Grey Fox. These Hounds caught/treed 18 Cat from Jan. to March 1st. Several more were left in Trees. I would not want to own any of these individuals....yet I bought the Pack for a friend in Texas. The Team was/is as nice a Pack of Hounds as I have seen in a while! Their Coach did a heck of a job blending the Talent into a Pack of EFFECTIVE Hounds.

JC as to what we do with our Culls....sending them to OR might work if someone wanted one?

Jc just because those 4 catch all the time, doesn't mean you don't need back ups. Females in heat, dog gets killed, dog gets injured from a fall, a old dog has to be retired, etc. Who knows when lady bad luck will fall your way, atleast you'll be prepared! A mediocre dog just might train up that new super star as well.
