Hunting With the Ghosts

Post by Gary Roberson »

J. Martin Bassinger, Steve and I just returned from hunting in deep South Texas. We were guests of great friends from San Antonio and hunted one of their ranches near Hebbronville. The house we stayed in was originally built by the Spaniards in 1717 as a mission. Legend has it that the house is haunted and most of the locals avoid the ranch for fear of the ghosts and spirits that are known to inhabit the area. I spent three nights on the ranch and did not have an encounter.
At any rate, we had a great time but were limited to hunting mornings, only for the evenings were hot and windy. Since we were shooting for CARNIVORE, we hunted the days only.
We started ten cats and had tough luck until the last morning. I guess our luck remained bad as the dogs caught it on the ground and we got no video.
J. Martin got in a tight with a couple of BIG rattlesnakes but that is another story.
Aios,
Gary

Gary,

I reckon them big diamond backs are a sight more harmful than those old Spainish ghosts. LOL!

Sounds like a great trip, and my friend Russ Yates the well know bit and spur maker from Rotan knows J. Martin well and has accompanied him on some very successful cat hunts, and says he is a top hand.

Sounds like a good time even with the Snakes.

Hope you all are able to make another hunt with Mr. J. before Hollywood takes himn away from you. Cental Casting would be hard pressed to find a Better Cowboy/Houndsman!

When will Carnivore be back on? We look forward to it.

I left for the NRA Convention in St. Louis the morning after returning from South Texas. Good friend, Travis Hall, CEO and President of BROWNING North America beat me back to Menard on Sunday evening. Every spring Travis comes down for a turkey hunt, just he and I without cameras or outdoor writers. We hunted Monday and Tuesday and killed four mature gobblers. The weather could not have been better as it was 42 on Monday and 38 on Tuesday. The only thing that would have made it better is if the gobbles could have been replaced by the bawl of my hounds.

Gary

I have had the pleasure of talking with J. Martin on the phone for the past 6-8 months. I feel real fortunate that he has opened up and shares his knowledge and stories with me. Someday I hope to get down and meet him in person. I would of loved to seen him dancing with the snakes! Lol
