Dog box on a trailer pros cons?

Post by 2ndhound »

Anybody using this setup? had a tent trailer that I finally killed off, stripped it down to the frame, put a wood deck on it, was planning to just use it for hauling junk and the occasional tent type trip to carry coolers and stuff on.
anyway I keep eyeballing it thinking why not put a dogbox on it for the times I want to hunt a more remote area that a regular camp trailer cant take the road?
I was thinking with a dogbox mounted on the deck the hounds could ride there and I would have the back of the pickup to haul tents sleeping bags etc and not have my young male christen things for me.
Then I got to wondering about dust and exhaust.
any experience with this?
Thanks Ken

Dust-- you bet-- exhaust could make them a bit sick too-- worst-- if it should come loose(and they have) you just might be looking for a new pack..
some years back a fellow had a nifty looking trailer and mounted a box on it -- started to come for a hunt-- it came off and the box was kindling-- lost 3 dogs and had 2 more crippled to where they would not hunt..
the bouncing of the trailer is usually enough to upset some hounds...--

put your camp gear in a good box on that trailer.( the beer might be a little fizzy if you open one)

I think that there is more protection for a dog that is in a box that is in the bed of a truck.

I have not witnessed wrecks with trailers, but I have seen the results of one, and it was not pretty. The bed is the safest and most secure spot, imo.

I had my dog box on a trailer for a short time while I hunted out of a Jeep. I had the 4 wheeler behind it. It worked, and I didn't wreck it, but I was nervous all the time about it.

Build up some decent rails for holding your camping gear, and put the dogs in the truck. Tow the trailer to where you want to camp, and then hunt from there, no need to move boxes around.
