Re: Ticks????
Well that is interesting. Have yet to go read those reports. Don't really need to, but will. In unknown amount of years using Ivomec. It has never been effective on ticks in WI. Had not treated my dogs in almost a month. or my yard yet this year due to temps. Until yesterday that is. I did however worm my dogs last weekend with Ivomec. Wouldn't you know it. I was pulling ticks of a couple of dogs in my yard yesterday. SO the reason for treatment. Now if it actually worked there would have been no need for to spray the yard, and treat the dogs. We can't turn dogs loose in our area this time of year. So were not picked up in the woods. If it were effective. I would not spend the money. Don't have the extras to throw away. If it were effective, then why are there no products using it, or labeled for ticks. I could not even begin to tell you how many guys use Ivomec in this state. None will claim it to work on ticks. You take a walk in the woods here, and there are days you will be picking ticks the rest of the night. Perhaps dozens of them at times. Just takes one to give a life threatening disease.
If it was effective, why would the company not market it as such? I forget off the top of my head. But, I believe Ivomec only lasts about 5 days in the dogs system. So that means using it 6 times a month to keep the ticks off. That's cost effective. You come hunt here in WI with just Ivomec on your dogs. You will be pulling ticks off your dogs, and will have a very good chance of taking home a very sick dog.
Maybe in the western states, Egypt, and London. It may work, but certainly has ZERO effect in WI. I will not put my dogs at risk by using something that don't work. Nor, will I tell anyone to use a product that is known to not work. Like I said. When you loose a dog to a tick disease, or have battled one yourself. Your atttitude will change. Especially when you loose one of your best dogs. Then top it off by having it die in your daughters bedroom! Took a long time before she would even sleep in that room!!!
Even the CDC does not condone the use of Ivomec as a preventative. I learned a few things this morning reading on their site. Here is a link to the page. It is worth taking a look at.

Re: Ticks????
I just did a bunch of bouncing around. Found the abstract from the Egypt research.
Effect of ivermectin on the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus.
Morsy TA, Haridy FM.
Source
Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt.
Abstract
Ivermectin (Ivomec) proved to be effective in controlling R. sanguineus. All brown dog ticks infesting the treated dogs (subcutaneous injections) with 1.5 ml or 2 ml/50 kg dropped off within 4 or 3 days respectively. The dropped off ticks were completely inactive and died within one day or two. Ticks exposed to filter papers impregnated with 100 micrograms/ml (66.67%) died within four days. A dose of 1.5-2 microliters/50 kg eradicated Toxocara canis infection in four dogs, and caused shrinkage of Dipylidium caninum gravid segments in three. A general discussion was given with special reference to the contraindications and side effects of ivermectin particularly for human usage.
PMID:
10786024
[PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]
Read that real close. Not effective in prevention. Effective in controlling!! Oh boy! They will fall off after 3 or 4 days! After the first day the dogs has already been infected with a disease. That's kinda like quitting drinking after you crashed your car. Or smoking after getting cancer, and so on.
Like most folks, I WANT PREVENTION!! Keep digging, and reading. Most of anything shows only a few tick species may be controlled. Many more publications state it to not be effective then there are those that say it is!
Do what you want. Regardless of what happens. I will not say, I TOLD YOU SO! Might kick yourself though when your dog gets sick or worse dies. I wonder if the feeling is a bit worse when you know you might have been able to prevent it.

Re: Ticks????
hell i don't use ivomect for tick control i use it like everybody else for heartworm . i just noticed that when i'm lax at dipping and sraying i don't have much of a tick problem on the dogs . i work harder than most people in prevention of any and all parasites and pest in my kennel . permethrin and martins I.G. REGULATER combo in my sprayer is my favorite killer and deterent . just got through dipping the dogs in the permethrin and myself i might add lol . but i did assume that the ivomect would HELP control any biting and sucking insect . gotta do all you can . i did find all the studies very interesting though cain't never learn too much . now if i can just get my other two neighbors to drench their cattle to help with the flie problem i could take off and go fishin lol see ya

Re: Ticks????
See, I just learned something. Never heard of that martens. Although not something we would need here. Not much of a flea, or roach problem in these parts.
I may be coming off a bit harsh on this. Not really my intention. It's just that I get a bit nuts about this stuff ever since loosing our Spur dog. Prior to that was a bit laxed at times. Now it is personal, and have declared war on them.
Not that I want to argue about this. Just want everyone to have the most knowledge in combating these little monsters. It is an absolute horrible death for our friends. I feel there is never enough we can do for them. They are not our tools, but family members, and get treated as such.
If there is something that is working out there. We all need to hear about it. With 15+ possible diseases they can get from ticks. Prevention is a must. At least IMHO!
