Cat Scratching Posts

Post by CRA »

Went out scouting for new cat areas yesterday and found some sign. It looks like I will have to return later. Conditions are super dry and windy now.

I call these cat scratching posts "Claw Sharping Tree's"

Wish there was more pictures like these. I have yet to find a scratching post but I can imagine what it'll look like now.

I was just wondering if a lion would possibly do a scratching post up in a tree? I was recently involved in a call about a domestic dog kill by a lion in a relatively populated community. Actually the cat was seen at least three times in a week and her cub came into the backyard a couple of times, within twenty feet of these people's back porch.

Not to loose sight of the subject and bog down with unrelated details, we were unsuccessful in picking up a track, but while we were walking the area with our hounds we saw what looked to me like a scratching post about fifteen feet up in a "Live Oak Tree". It was horizontal and splintered rather deep. I wish now that I had taken a picture!

I've seen a few Bob scratches through the years, but I don't believe I ever saw anything like this one.

I have seen a couple of scratching post in this area made by lions. They were on alders and made from the ground. I have seen where bobcats have been in a tree on a big leaning limb and make scratches. I have seen several bobcat scratches made on power poles and treated sign post. Dewey
