Forward Cast - We refer to a dog with a good forward cast when he is willing to swing much wider than the other dogs on a "lose".
You only need one of these kind of dogs in a pack. Sometimes he will make a pack look bad, sometimes it takes a good while for him to get back in the race.

Re: Bobcat Houndsmen's Dictionary and Glossary
OK Folks, Ish, South Texan, Mr. Dewey and the others have covered some good ones.
Here are couple of terms as to Style that this is how we define these terms:
DRIFTING a track…….this refers to a Hound who is smart enough to take a hint of Bobcat smell and then figure out which way the Cat has gone (usually into the wind) and DRIFT that way (not barking) till he finds where the Cat has left enough Scent to provoke a Bark out of the Hound.
SWINGING, this pertains more to what a Hound does after a Cat is Jumped. This Hound is swinging looking to the side and ahead of the Race…trying to find where the Cat is headed then “Knocking the Wind” out of the Cat. The real Smart Swinging Hounds seem to know when this becomes unnecessary and then will become Track runners. Where we hunt it is important to have one or two like this in your Pack.
JUMPED this refers to when the Cat know that the Hounds are after him, he may have been already moving away from the sound of the Pack, but now knows that the Hounds Barking are after him. He feels the PRESSURE and opens his Bag of Tricks.
PRESSURE, this is when the Cat feels the heat of the Hounds that are after him….his tricks are failing to lose the Hounds….the Hounds are now MAKING the Cat do something, possibly something it does not want to do.
COLD TRAILING…..the Hounds are not able to smell the Track well but can advance it albeit slowly. This may be do to the Cat having been gone a long time or it could be do to POOR Scenting conditions.
RIGGING or BOXING…..this refers to putting the Strike Hounds up on top of the Dog Box and driving slowly (we drive about 12 MPH) down roads to find where a Bobcat has exposed itself.
These are some terms that Folks new to the Sport might not be familiar with. Sure do like the responses from Folks…keep them coming!
OK S&E let me tell what we mean when we say WINDING.
WINDING....This is when a Hound catches the smell coming right off the Bobcat, not off of the track or vegetation the Cat may have rubbed against. We will have Hounds do this off the Box, Road Hunting, and during a Race. Our Rivers Hound is a Master of working the wind currents when Rigging....many times he will BLOW up Barking intensely having caught the Cats Scent out in a Clear Cut....when released he will go immediately into the Clear Cut and be running the Cat, the other Hounds went up or down the Road trying to find where the Cat had been. WINDING is also the way Most Hounds Tree a Bobcat. They have to catch the Smell of the Cat in the air as generally a Cat will jump high on a Tree rather than climbing like a Coon. These are just the things we see and how we see them.

boy i can see were a guy could really not understand somethings when speaking to someone about how a hound runs. what c.j. discribed as drifting i would have called winding. and would expect it to be done both on the rig and while free cast. and be good enough at it to home in on it well enough to find the track. then what happens is what i consider the talent of all talents (drifting the track). running head high with the ability to stay in the middle of the track with amaving speed. it will make your jaw drop in amazement when you see a good one,as some can do it on a cold track also.this is just our definition. and i believe some of the diferences in words come from being hermit like and calling things what ever we all feel like, not ever thinking or caring if anyone understands. anyway we think of drifting a type of track style. take care, Willy
