Rattlers Strike Again

Postby Gary Roberson » Thu Jun 21, 2012 1:59 pm

I was hunting this morning and after a good race, dogs caught a big boar coon on the ground. Dan got bitten pretty good which is not unusual. I kept on hunting and the dog struck a pretty good track and were hitting on it pretty good. Dan was doing a good job and was in the lead when I heard him bark strangely. I guess this is when the snake hit him as this broke up the race and all the dogs came back in to me.
I did not realize that the dog was bitten after I loaded them as he had not begun to swell. I moved into the next pasture and dumped the dogs one last time. When I looked at Dan, the bridge of his nose appeared to be swollen but I dumped him anyway as I thought it could be from the earlier battle. The dogs trailed in and treed so I walked in and shot a coon out to them. When Dan got back to the truck, his head was more swollen and I knew what had happened.
He has had the rattlesnake vaccine and was struck in a good place if there is such a thing; very little muscle tissue there. I will keep you updated.

Gary

Poor Dan's eyes were swollen completely shut this morning. Hugh Childress checked on him about 3:30 and I could see his eyes so I guess the swelling somewhat less. I will keep you posted.

Had to leave on Monday for Mississippi where I finished the "voice overs" for this season's CARNIVORE shows. I got back in at 3:15 AM this morning and checked on the hounds after daylight. Dan was standing at the kennel gate and was ready to load. He looks fine and is long overdue for an outing.
I know that the effectiveness of the rattlesnake vaccine has been debated but my experience with rattlesnake bites will keep me spending the $20/year.

This stuff works , They'll swell and maybe rot out a little but they'll live . Use it ,if for no other reason, your piece of mind.
I can make 'em go and I can make 'em Whoa !
God makes 'em do.
I'll take Jesus, you can have the field
