trip in Sept/Oct
I'm coming over in late sept and all oct
Landing in Denver , then thinking of going across the top of NM , back into Colorado on the Western side
Up to Wyoming and across through the Nth of Idaho and onto Spokane area
Will there be any road closures to look out for as i plan this trip
Sort of have been looking at Raton , Aztec , Mesa Verde , Durango , Grand Junction , Cody and then ? .planning to be in WA about the 15th
Going to Vermont on the 19th and NH about the 24th
Looking at the odd trail hike , wildlife and scenery , seeing people and their hounds would be a bonus
Any tips on things to see or do would be helpful

Re: trip in Sept/Oct
In late Sept early Oct--
should not be too many closed roads-- Raton NM-- Be sure to take hwy 555 west of Raton early evening ---for wildlife viewing or about sunup- it goes through the Vermejo Park ranch-- Private Property-- but the chances of seeing lots of elk are real strong.. while working in that area a few years back it was very easy to see lots of Elk every evening just before sundown.. seen most of the bears early morning...only some from the RR tracks in the mid day time span.
-Raton NM-- at the Oasis cafe be sure and get a Red Chili burger and tell them to put Red Chili on the fries also!
another scenic drive that I enjoyed is in the Mora, NM area-- another is from Cimarron NM to Taos,Nm
being from Kansas those mountains were sure nice
when you leave Denver going south on I25 turn off at Walsenburg going west toward La Veta
Hwy 160 to Hwy 12 then go on Hwy 12 toward Trinidad thru the Stonewall country-- worth the trip!

If your in the Cody area swing north and head up Chief Joseph highway and then stop in Cooke City for lunch and then head back down the beartooth highway and have dinner in Red Lodge. I'm just west of Red Lodge so let me know when your in the area. Take time to smell the roses!!!!!

If you go to Durango, CO take hwy 550 north out of town up to Silverton. Probably one of the most scenic rides in the lower 48.

When you are in Cody head up the North Fork towards Yellowstone and stop into Crossed Sabres Ranch. I am the chef there and you will not have better food on your trip
I like my men like I like my mountains...... Rugged, challenging, and WILD!!!

Re: trip in Sept/Oct
Been over and back home again.
Met some great people , and saw a pile of hounds, Had a great time
To all i met , Thanks for everything
Appreciated every minute with the hounds,
Durango to Silverton is a great drive, Unfortunately Chief Joeseph highway was closed and so was a couple roads in Yellowstone
Saw a good Elk alive and a real goodun dead in the back of a truck.
A grizzly bear , and lots of other critters
It's a great country you have there
I'll be back
