Hi my name is Clint Powers, and I am glad to be a new member to your/our website. I was introduced to this exhilarating sport last year, while I was working under the apprenticeship of a ferrier (horse shoe'r). I am nineteen years old, love chasing cats, and the companionship of a hound dog! My question is though before I drop a large sum of money on a good dog, is......... what is the absolute best scent hound for cougar?

Its the one that gets the job done. Dont worry about color and breed. Find the bloodline that is treeing game in your area.Hunt with the dog before you buy it .Preferably buy itself or with few other dogs so you can tell what the dog is doing.Dont believe any of us.We all believe we are hunting with the best bloodline.Otherwise we wouldnt be hunting it .Some of us know what we are doing and some of us dont. But most of us think we do.Most of us are honest but some of us dont know as much as we think we do.Some of us are crooks.If you go hunt with a dog try to take someone with you that has some experience hunting dogs . Just because a dog shines on a track doesnt mean It was even on the game you were trying to catch.Dont spend a large sum of money on any dog unless you see it under some trees.Dont take every free or cheap dog somebody offers you.It is a big ivestment of time and money for every dog you hunt.You might get lucky with that kind of dog but not very often.Do your research on the dogs you hunt.Start with a small enough # of dogs that you can do right by them.Grow your pack if you choose to as you learn more and the dogs you have are catching game.Dont add dogs to existing dogs that are not catching game you will just ruin the new dog.You are better off to start over. Another peice, don't burn bridges with other houndmen and or trappers. At first they will seem like asses but later on you just might get a bit of wisdom out of them. Its like a fraternity of sorts, takes awhile for the others to trust you.

If you do go with another houndman, don't use his spot unless you are with him or he tells you its ok. And don't take your dogs, just go with him and his pack to learn all you can. (This was how I learned everything I know now)

i just read your posts, and glad to here that theirs new people still getting started as apps on there own. im from bc canada started at the age of 13 bee full independant as of 17-18. wish id paid more attention to those that took me out the straight up and truth is . nowing the area, miles of road coverd and the most inportant is your dog or dogs. best dogs that ive ever had, are those that i got as pups. i worked them as soon as i got them. but make sure you dont pressure them past what there attention or comfort levall is. ruind some good pups by pushing them and getting mad and frustraighted when they became timmid.never had any luck with an older so called started or finished dog. id never sell a good dog so why would some one els.
