Re: bear bait ????
I have had good luck with all and switching up works well. But if i could only have one it would be peanut butter with liquid smoke.
Re: bear bait ????
Trail mix, granola, and peanut butter are all good. I like cookies, doughnuts, and potato chips as well. Most baiters and houndsmen I know use lots of used fryer grease as well. Vanilla and liquid smoke work well as attractants, however the liquid smoke will hang around longer and attract bears for a longer period of time.

Re: bear bait ????
on our sites we keep feeding them good ,but before the CHOW goes down ,we put out the Molasses a few days before with this alone starts bringing them in .Been doing this for 20+ years always works .
Re: bear bait ????
As far as I'm concerned donuts r unbeatable, but can't get them like we used to do use granola. Lots of different kinds of it I prefer stuff with nuts n Berrys. I also use used grease from restaurants n smoke drippings from smoked fish n jerky house.

Tbblue : Can't say I ever tried Smoke drippings from smoked fish n jerky house . Quite amazing how much grease you can accumulate from ones house . All the Throw-out food goes into a pail , Meat , Fruits , Veggies ,Gravy breads etc; Freeze it till baiting time .still get good access for doughnuts . Tried Fish heads and Tails many times but generally the trail cams show the Coons going after the fish before the bears take it . Usually put the fish in a seperate pail ,any left over household food gets added to it ,put a tight lid on it ,let it sit out in the sun for quite a while and that is what we use for coyote bait
Re: bear bait ????
I don't like the garbage or fish it gets to nasty n find it brings in a lot of unwanted critters. As far as the smoke , it's almost like a thick syrup. I have it in bout.2 gallon jug n just open lid stir it with a long stick , pull out the stick n wipe it high in a y of a tree , smells a long ways n is strong. As far as the grease I like the tube style squirt gun to suck it out the jug n put it high up in the trees. Pie filling or powdered jello smells good to them too. Just put a little on top of Wut ur baitin with.

Re: bear bait ????
tbblue : You do bring out a few points that perhaps some of the new bear baiters overlook . I have always been intrigued by baiting and find the topic very interesting . I can say with certainty as reguards ourselves in Maine that putting bait and scents in the upper reaches of a tree is very critical in the process of initially getting bears to come into a new area.Over the years I would say that NOT doing this has delayed or slowed the process by a ratio of about 3-4 to 1 . As I have stated many times we put sand down about a 4 ft radius around all baits between that and the trail cams that is the conclusion we get . NOT scientific for sure but I can't dispute the facts .
Re: bear bait ????
I sand all baits too . Cameras on occasion n timers they deffinetly let u know Wut kind of nose ur hounds have even though time isn't everything conditions play a big role. Kinda off the initial sub. With the camera stuff But keep an open mind to wat others do n use at bait sites. There's times the bears just shut er down on ya n need a little change or something.

Re: bear bait ????
A lot of donut shops will give you stale donuts free, and those work fine and are a lot pleasanter to carry to the bait site than garbagy mixes. Sweet and greasy! Mmmm, all the bear favorites.
That said, one place I hunt is a summer camp, and we start at their trash compactor. What I've found is the most popular thing with the bears there is the banana peels, so I sometimes use over-ripe bananas if I can get hold of them. That seems to appeal to the bears more than the other critters. I NEVER carry bananas with me when coon hunting at night, because I don't want to be bear bait!

TbBlue: Don't other peoples bait work? i heard of running off other peoples baits work better than baiting for yourslef; or find other peoples baits and put our own baits 25 or 50 yards away? But it sure is allot eaiser to run off other people's baits. Takes allot of work off your shoulders. BtW thanks For the Liver and Heart

Re: bear bait ????
One thing we have been adding the last few years is old Corn silage . It does tend to bring in the coons on occasion but from the sand tracks around the baits the bears love it too ! Got a good friend that owns a dairy farm . The wife and I help him out 10-12 days per year no charge ,just trade our time for a couple pick-up truck loads of cow manure for our garden and a couple of loads of silage to add to the baits . I have tried the silage itself for bait , It does wok for bears BUT the temptation to bears if they can smell Grease Pastries will win out every time . And that is NO BULLSHIT !

You might want to be careful with the corn silage. Wet corn silage is very strong corn alcohol. You can end up with drunk bears. And some bears are mean drunks!
Not that I've ever dealt with a drunk bear, but years ago my parents bought a messy farm with a leaky silo. A friend and I were assigned to dig out the fermented silage at the bottom--not that much, maybe 3-4 feet deep. My friend Jon went in and before he could even start digging, passed out from just inhaling the fumes in the semi-enclosed space. Had to drag him out by his feet....
