Big Mike,

This is good news for hound guys and in reality it is good news for ranchers. I can't for the life of me understand why now some ranchers especially those that hold Govt. grazing permits are now up in arms about this and raising cain because they say this just allows more access on their range. THEIR RANGE galls me when they say that. Yes they pay for the priveldge of grazing stock on it but it is not their range. I grew up ranching , and I understand the Taylor Grazing Act. but I guess some people would cry even if you hung them with a brand new rope. LOL!

I am not sure if it will greatly impact the female and sub mortality that much. First most people will still only sport hunt or outfit hunt the higher zones when there is adequate snow cover to insure some success> relatively few of these hunters ever catch a true bare ground lion except for the occasional lion run of a kill or a fluke. They will however feel they have more time to hunt so they very well might wait a bit longer rather than slapping the trigger on the first female or sub that they run up a tree. In lower zones which recieve little or no snow we still do find some who maintain bare ground packs of lion dogs. Most of these hunters as the record shows usually hold out for tom lions unless they are handling some type of depredation problem. Hound hunters still have the opportunity to choose for the most part if they kill a lion or not.

Now then trap/snare men use a method that is non-discrminatory and the trap or the snare doesn't care it just catches and becasue lion trapping for sport is illegal in New Mexico this is usually either allowed depredation trapping or out behind the barn sort of stuff and most of these get whacked anyway.

Sounds good Jube, I think it will be signed soon, and then licenses will be available. Won't be long and the higher country will cool down some. these monsoon rains have helped and the hounds are getting wound up in the early mornings wanting to travel.

I CALLED NMDGF ON WEDNESDAY AND SPOKE WITH A FELLOW WHO SAID AN INDIVIDUAL COULD PURCHASE THE LICENSE ONLINE, BUT THE CARCASS TAG WOULD BE MAILED TO YOU...HIS SUGGESTION WAS IF I WANTED MY CARCASS TAG IMMEDIATELY IT WOULD BE BEST TO GO TO A LOCAL WALMART OR OTHER DEALER THAT SOLD NM HUNTING LICENSES... OTHERWISE PURCHASE IN ADVANCE TO AVOID DELAYS

You can buy a license on line but you cant get the 2nd tag until July 31st so you might as well wait until then. Also if you buy your license on line it still takes a couple of weeks to get the tags and you cant legally hunt without the tags. If you already bought a license you can go back and get your 2nd tag anytime after the 31st
