Cats chasin coons

Postby newby » Tue Jul 10, 2012 3:06 am

I was driving home late last night in an area that I rarely see coons in and I see a coon cross the road right in front of me...that was cool enough, but right on the coons tail is a black housecat that proceeds chase the coon across the highway. The cat was half the size of the coon but was definitely the predator in the situation cause that coon was high-tailin it for the brush. Have you guys ever seen anything like this, cause I never have? Also, do bobcats exhibit this same behavior or is this just a rank housecat?

This wild cat might have had a litter of kittens close by and that put the bravo into it and other animals seem to repspect a mad Mama. do not think however that coons blanche from the most part from housecats or bobcats on the contrary they will push them off food and if need be kill the housecats, and will also a big coon when pushed over something he wants will not give and inch to a bobcat.

When I was a kid we use to feed the barn cats out off the back porch where we would put down a tub of dry cat food and let them feed at will during the night. We noticed them eating a tremendous amount of food and yet the cats looked pretty poor until I snuck out there one night and flipped on the light . there right in the middle of that tub was a big old coon eating to his heart's delight and all around him were housecats full grown some toms setting back watching him and not saying a word. We decided we would feed the cats during the day and pull the tub up when it got dark as we knew the coon or coons would be walking then. Must have upset the coon cuz in the night you would here horrible sounds and the next morning you would find a dead housecat with it's face chewed off. He went on a cat killing rampage and he would even tackle them up in the big cottonwood tree by the barn. When he killed a whole litter of partially grown kittens one night it was decided he had to go, and measures were taken. as far as I know this was one coon and the problems ended but i can't imagine what two or three big coons could accomplish. LOL!

You know the old saying, be careful you might get what you wish for. My advice to the Cat would be, be careful you might catch the Coon.

Take care, Willy

It'd be fun to let the dogs go and see if they treed the cat or the coon or both. Coons are not as tough as people make out. Yes they can put up a crazed fight, but they die pretty good too.

It's funny, but that's the same sick thought I had...it was all I could do to keep from grabbing the dogs and seeing : ).

Coons are a lot like bears in some regards; many times they will run from nearly anything and put up little resistance and then a cog will slip and they go the other way and the omnivore side gives way to the carnivore side. Never take anything for granted with the masked bandit becasue about the time you do he will surprize you. I have seen big northern boar coon stand off and tear the heack out of a couple of dogs that each by themself could kill a big tom bobcat so fast you could hardly get a squeek out of him. Pound for pound they can be very tough, and unlike housecats they do not really on runing a big fuzzed up tail bluff on the opponent they will come in swinging.
We have all seen housecats take after a big dog and run him off at times when he wasn't up for a fight and the cat knew the dog . we all most likley have seen that same cat try to run that bluff on a dog that wasn't a pussy for a pussy and seen the tables turn very quickly. LOL!

Many years ago, before I had coon dogs, I spent a summer on a semi-abandonned farm my parents had purchased and were trying to put back in order. This was in Connecticut. I was living in an old farmhouse surrounded by cherry trees. My roommate had a housecat. One night when the cherries were ripe, that cat whined to go out so we let it out and flipped on the light in the yard. There were maybe a dozen coons and another dozen feral housecats in the yard, gorging on cherries and playing what looked like a team sport, tossing cherries at each other. They appeared to be having a grand time, and my roommate's cat joined right in on the fun, joining the feline team right off. We thought it was some wild fluke, but for the next week, while there were still plenty of cherries, the scene repeated itself every night around midnight. Both the raccoons and the cats seemed to be having a fun and seeking each other out for play. Never seen anything like that again.
