Just not sure
Just not sure
So I've been out for the last few weeks poundin the brush and only catchin 1 or 2 out of quite a few bears. They strike and go then one by one drop out. This afternoon they struck hard lined it out and were gone, they went a long ways but once again one by one dropped out. So we went up where the gps told us the dogs were and when getting close the dogs that had struck and dropped out struck again. A few minutes later the last dog hit the road all tuckered out. So thinking they struck again so we thought we would put out fresh dogs. They backtracked track for track where they started. So either they were wrong @ first or 2nd heck I dont know this is really frustrating. So you can only go out so many times without a tree and then you know there is a problem. I just don't know what it is. Weve caught bears with these same dogs alot. So tell me what you think.
The long bawl in early fall, the steady chop, the hammer drop. The chase and the tree, the passion of hunting for you and me. The old dog and the pup, the juvenile thats always corrupt. The snow the rain the laughter and pain. These dogs called hounds, we chase through the brush, waiting for the tree, our next big rush.
Re: Just not sure
back tracking will definately kill your percentage of caught bears in a hurry .when rigging look for tracks before you dump to make sure to put them down the right way.and if not sure put your start dog down and give it time to go the right way without pressure from other dogs being dumped this can force it into going the wrong way because of competition. sometimes the start dog will trail out aways before they turn around and run it the right way . if they dont know the difference at all then they shouldnt be your start dog.also dogs who become scared of a bear will sure do everything you dont want them to ,because going to a bear is the last thing on their mind they will wreck a race in a hurry .keep your eyes peeled for that dog at all times and remove it from your pack .a dog that is very mouthy and loud that doesnt know what it is doing will draw dogs the wrong way also. these are just some things that may or may not apply to your situation hope it helps sincerely kordog.
Re: Just not sure
Hey thanks for the ideas went out again lastnight. Had a hell of a race bout 8 hours. Covered alot of ground. All dogs were in the same place except one. Bear crap everywhere I mean I must have steped in 4 piles anyway it had rained a lil while b4 and anyway had a young dog treein and he heard some others and pulled off. Man this is gettin frustaratin. Three of the dogs are solid bear dogs and 2 are young pups. The one dog has literally been on hundreds of bears. Not sayin he wont mess up but man this many times? So they struck never got hung up after gettin lined out and went hard for hours. We ended up in a swamp area with two dogs treein on one side and two on the other side boo hooin around. The one quit and then the other. So man I've been on several trees with these dogs and watched them fight bears that don't want to tree lots of people say they have dogs that will pull hair I've watched these dogs do it so I am @ a loss. This many times somethin is def wrong. So I think I will go back to baits and go from there. Do you all think it's necessary to put one out to them every once and awhile? They haven't chewed on one in a long time. Cant do it now but in a month or so. Just haven't done it in a long time. So yeah gettin kindda po'd. Never had this much trouble before. I still haven't ruled out trash. Thanks

Re: Just not sure
i think i would break my pack down into running two dogs at a time especially not running both pups at the same time . this may help to figure out where the problem is try different combos .your most trusted dog with who ever .getting outrun by a running bear can certainly seem like a trash race at times when you have seen no tracks and are in doubt of what they are doing . the dogs get out run then decide to mess with some hotter game or just fall out..a kill for the dogs certainly is a plus into keeping them bear minded especially pups that have never had one. i know percentages of trash races go down after dogs have had a kill in most cases.there are damn few 100 percent broke hounds .if hounds catch and kill off game it has deffinately increased their desire to run that i can assure you ,even with tritronics.haveing hounds in tip top running shape also alleviates alot of those dogs falling out of races that you think should end at a tree /bayup .good luck weeding out your problem sincerely kordog p.s getting in the woods with the dogs can be challenging to keep up with ,but can take some of the guess work out.

Lots of rocks in idaho I know. Try draging the roads the night before to make it easer to cut a track that way you can get rid of one of the problems your thinking it might be about going backwards and then you can narrow it down for what is going on. Also I've seen it before in areas where the bears know they can get away so its usually a hell of a time to catch, try to hunt a different area a cupple of times and see what is happening. and I agree with kordog that giving your lead dog a chance to start the track the right way is very good practice when your having troubles like these. it could be a good test on finding the track first and then let him start it with out showing him which way to go. put a shocker on him so you can stop him if he goes the wrong way. or let him get out of hearing before you start your other dogs the right way
