Bear with a Sweet Tooth Breaks into Colorado Candy Shop

Smelling sweet treats coming from an Estes Park, Colorado candy store, a bear managed to open the front door to the shop overnight to feast to his heart’s content.

When store owner Jo Adams arrived at the shop on the morning of Wednesday, July 25, she hardly noticed anything was out of place except for a few candy wrappers on the ground and some dirt on the counter. She thought a squirrel might have gotten in to her store, the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, a franchise throughout Colorado.

She called for assistance to help clean up and find the squirrel, but when family members arrived, Adams looked at surveillance cameras to find the culprit: a hungry bear.

In just 20 minutes’ time the bear made seven trips in and out of the candy shop by prying open the front door, which had an unsecured deadbolt. He would steal up as much candy as he could hold then whisk it outside to chow down. This was at approximately four o’clock in the morning.

Surprisingly, nothing else was damaged. “He was very clean and very careful. He ate a lot of candy,” Adams told the Estes Park News.

After cleaning the store, throwing away any candy he might have touched and fixing the deadbolt, the candy shop was again open for business. You might think that having so much merchandise eaten or thrown away would be bad for business, but the popularity of the bear actually drove more customers to the shop, some of whom order “what the bear ate.”

Below is surveillance camera footage of the bear’s escapade into the shop and a word from Adams about the treats that enticed the bear the most.

I have tried the CANDY on our baits the past few years . I now have a source for " OLD " candy and it does work well, Though it tends to draw in more squirrels and coons than I prefer. Funny thing about Chocolates is while back-tracking the bears trails ,I am of the opinion it tends to give them the SHITZ more than the Pastries and other Condiments that we serve . I wonder if anyone could chime in on the difference between Bear and Hounds DIGESTIVE tracks ,I know hounds should NEVER be given Chocolates but NOT sure why ?

chocolate causes liver damage in dogs. nonetheless, my childhood bloodhound once stole a five lb box of Belgian dark chocolate truffles, along with the papers surrounding them. Belgian guests had carried them over to us. We stupidly left them on the coffee table while we went in to dinner. Made him vomit, but didn't do anything worse... The vet told us we were lucky.

All I know is that TBBlue catches a lot of game. His dogs can do it start to finish everytime and I have been in the woods with him a lot to see it first hand! Hard to run off another mans bait when the bear crosses the road on state land!

We buy 2000# blocks of chocolate and cut them up with chain saws into roughly 2 x 2 chunks and feed them in early season. They are a huge gas saver. Only need to rebait once a week. Once the berries and corn get ripe cookies and cookie dough seem to work best. Worchestershire ( spelling ?) sauce is a cheaper alternative to liquid smoke and mixed with water and sent through a garden type pump sprayer can really get the scent up there. Bears seem to come in and at least flip the lid off to this combination even if the corn is milking

Up here in ak we tend to use dog food, malases, anise as it has a stronger scent than vinalla and bears up here seam to come to it well the liquid smoke is good as it tends to linger. A good honey burn works well to. Anouther good thing up here is beaver carcuses if you trap or know a trapper after he skins the beaver ask him for the carcus. Good luck with figuring out what works best in your area.
