New Alpha collars

Post by judnbitsy »

I was wondering if anyone has tried them yet(garmin alpha) and opinions on them. I have the garmin astro 220/dc40's now but the boogers are getting old enough I am going to have to purchase a correction system as well. I am tempted to get them combined but am a little leary, like buying a new phone right after they come out:) Is the reception as good as the astro and is the shock equal to the trashbreaker? Or am I better off running/charging/ handling multiple collars?
Thank you,

I have hunted with them on 7 bear runs now. I have owned astro 220 & 320"s for 5 years and I have a trashbreaker G3 sytem with 6 collars. this system tracks as good as the dc 30 collars which always reached just a touch farther than my dc40's the shock system is the same power on high as a trashbreaker but reaches way farther if you have signal on the collar it will reach them I shocked a trashy pup at 2 1/2 miles the other day I havent found a downfall yet they fixed almost all the complaints I had with the astro. the collars are much better looking stronger built You can definately tell Tri Tronics engineers designed the housing. In my opinion the new system is the way to go. one word of caution if you hunt with others that have astro you cannot track them and they cannot track you. But you also wont have those annoying pop ups telling you there is interference with your collar like happens with astro.

Anyone use the new alpha and a dc30 collar on dog at same time so others can track also would there be any interference.

I have used mine 4 days now and would agree with Jamie 100%. I will use them a few months before i make any decisions on geting rid of my astro stuff, but so far i like em. I put a DC 30 a DC 40 and a TT 10 on the same dog and the 10 worked better than the 40 and as good as the 30. I havnt used the traing part in the field yet but i drove 3 miles from the collar and both the tone and bite worked at 3 miles. Just my limited experience so far.

I would agree pretty much with what was said here. I was impressed with how well the system works.

Tracking range is about the same or slightly better than a DC30.
Shocking range is better.

It boils down to the cost to upgrade.

I'm running a Trade in Special right now.

Sorry We are working on that, I expect my staff to hopefully be extremely knowledgeable, but honest. I didn't really tell them allot about it because I hadn't really put it through the test, and I don't want to over sell something that we don't have confidence in. Once I got it out in the woods and built some confidence in the system, I'm trying to get them up to speed on how it works, and what it does and does not do. Otherwise they would just be reading the side of the box and I try to give a bit better info than that.

We have 2 % points, so any purchase would qualify for Credit to spend on your next purchase.
We also have a loan program so that if your unit or collars crap out, we would send you some to borrow while you waited for them to get repaired.
And We are taking in trade in.

What does the following mean? Can you send messages on it?

Hunter-to-hunter position reporting with preset messaging capability

It means that the handheld functions like a collar, sending out a signal that other hand helds can recieve.

There are about 20 preset messages (stop, go, help, others in area, and so on...) You can send them form one handheld to another.

Can that function be turned off?

So the 20 preset messages aren't editable? For instance you can't send texts like a phone? About 75% of the area that we hunt has no cell signal, so we have to communicate with radios which are always dying etc. However nobody lets there GPS die. I thought this would be a great way to communicate if it would work.

You cannot change the preset texts and you can't text like a phone.
