Shutting him up on trail

Postby ChargingCatcher » Sat Sep 29, 2012 2:12 am

Hi,
I am working with a black and tan coonhound pup right now. Going to start working him on hogs, just the same i have the constant fear he will start barking on trail.
I am going to be running him with silent dogs, but in the event he starts to open up even a little bit how I can stop it right then and there any tips or methods at all would help.

Honestly if he ends up being open on the trail and you don't like that kind of dog give him to or sell him to someone that hunts open dogs I've seen a lot of open dogs ruined by people trying to keep them silent. You could try shock collars and running him with silent dogs but if he is gonna be open then there's not a whole lot you can do to stop it. That's just my opinion and if your dead set on having silent a silent dog I would get a dog that is known to be silent or a pup that both parents are silent. Good luck with whatever you decide.

curdogfl is right, being open on the track ain't really something that you can break or unbreak, its just in the dog. And shocking while barking on a hog track will most likely break him from running hogs all together and not just barking.
