Newbie looking to gain experience and meet other houndsmen

Postby runnin akita » Tue Oct 02, 2012 2:32 am

I have a 1 year old walker and have worked with her since she was 9 weeks. she will get on a bobcat trail and go nuts. I feel I need to get her with some experienced dogs and let her learn from them. She needs to learn to bay when she hits the scent too, now she just takes off and I am scared to lose her.

My experience manners are #1 so if you got that down and a good tracking system(I used a bell when I started) don't be afraid to let them run

Well I took her out this weekend and let her run she did get on some thing but lost the trail pretty fast. So I will just keep up with it and hopefully someone else will let me run with them so she gets the idea.

my hound was similar except his first intrest was coons i borrowed two hounds from a buddy and threw them all out together my pup now knows what he is looking for when we go out for coon he will also run trail now and tree. and riding the box with my buddys lead dog my pup is learning to strike as well. i persoally highly recomend getting a couple older experinced dogs to run your pup with. it helps a huge amount i noticed a 100% turn around in my dog the trick is to get the pup doing it all on there own and not just follow the pack. i have an uncle from oregon ill check with him and see if he knows any houndsmen that would be willing to help out. either way dont give up and keep that dog running best if luck to ya

She will come back usually I have had a few times were she was more interested in what her nose was smelling at the time.Besides that a couple hollars and she comes back. But thats what worrys me I know when her nose smells that bob she going to go nuts. 208trapper that would be **** great I can tell thats what she needs. she dosent seem to want to run trash too I have tryed to get her to go for a coon tail but since she was little all I trained her on was bobs and she showed no intrest in the tail I had.

i have not got ahold of my uncle yet but ill keep trying.
stick with it.
let your dog see a live coon that may change his behavior towards them.
