need help with radios?
need help with radios?
What kind of radio is going to give me the best distance to communicate in the mountain's? Is it worth buying a hand held cb radio or will the talk abouts give me close to the same range? Again im just trying to stay in contact with my son
Re: need help with radios?
I've often wonder what the best handheld radios are for rugged canyon country. That way when I leave the truck I can turn one on, just incase something was to happen to me. I hunt alone probably 80% of the time.

Re: need help with radios?
Put a marine radio (VHF) in your truck and get a couple hand helds. The truck mounted one can be had for $150.00 or less and decent hand helds under $100. Most hand helds are small and you can switch them from high to low power to save battery life if your close. For unreal tk there is a very real chance that if you can't get ahold of anyone around, the coast guard or someone will hear you call for help on channel 16 although I sure wouldn't depend on that. I'd look into a S.P.O.T or ACR transponder if your concerned about getting help. I'm sure you can get better advice on which particular VHF to use from other people but any VHF will serve you pretty well.
Re: need help with radios?
I have a Garmin Rino and it has paid for itself several times. It is nice to know exactly where the other person is at that you're talking to. It is just too bad they are not compatible with the Astros! You can pick up the older ones fairly reasonable, and as long as the other party you are with has one, you won't be disappointed.
Re: need help with radios?
I thought about those rhinos but already have the astro and wanting the alpha but i no soon as i get it Garmin will come out with a new one with the radio and a camera in it seems like there's something new every year lol thanks for the responses and if anybody else has any input my ears are open thanks again
