Yeah i wanna run camp grounds cause ever time we go camping they get into everything. We try to stay in bigger sections. Yeah we got some busy roads too but thats why all our dogs have shock collars. Our coon population is up cause we pretty much had not winter.

I catch two or three everytime I go out. I do watch the weather and don't go unless the weather is somewhat favorable. In other words, don't go when the wind is blowing 30 mph.

Re: How often do you guys catch a coon??
When you say "catch", are you talking about a ground catch, or actually seeing a coon up a tree? I would say normally we see coon every time we go hunting, and it is usually more than one. As far as the hounds catching one on the ground, I would say about one out of every four or five hunts. Note above I used the term "normally" and "usually," last night didn't turn out so good. We had two huge hollowed out den trees and one deep beaver hole on a crick line the hounds couldn't quite get to.
Let me see your war face!!!

Treed in a big live oak mott early and did not look for the coon much as it was going to take a while. Struck one late and they caught it on the ground. It seems to go in spells but right now, I am catching about 1 out of three coons on the ground. I am not sure how much speed of hounds has to do with catching on the ground but I will say that I think I have a lot of speed in the three youngsters I am hunting at this time.

We got luck tonight and got 7. Ran from 7-9:30 and then 12:30-3ish. But i don't plan on running these odd hours often.

Houndcrazy93, You probably already know this. If so just dissregard.
From the sounds of your hunts you are going up into the mountains, this is fine but your only going to find mountain coons up there. The higher you go the more spread out coons seem to get. Find the water and you will find more coons. Creeks, ponds, marsh area's, find a rancher, farmer, dairy farmer or someone into fruit production. Politely ask to walk their bottom ground, focus on the drainages coming to or from the food source, you will see they are coon highway's. I started out coon hunting with my dogs, the lessons I learned while walk hunting my coon dogs taught me way more than I realized at the time. Some of my fondest hunting memories took place in a creek bed, myrtle grove or river bank.
Where I live, if a hunter is only catching a coon here or there, he is either in the wrong spot or dosent have coon dogs. Take care, and have fun. John.

Re: How often do you guys catch a coon??
yeah i am hunting mountain coons. but i just got a spot that river bottem, with cornfield and rasberry bushes surronding it. cut losse. and with in seconds my dogs struck. and treed it up on the edge of a swamp. im trying to get in contact with more land owners. the thing bout here is. there is a lot of good spots. but all of them are private. and a lot of the land is seperated pretty good. like i know of another good spot. but the whole are is owened by 3 people and would need all 3 permision becasue the dogs would end up getting treed on other property. but know one gives permision.

Welcome to washington hound hunters... No one wants to let you in. Everything is like a secret society. I would like to end it but I'm only one person. It's a shame because Ol' time houndsmen wouldn't have been strangers. Your pic looks like you are in Grays Harbor area? You have a lot of competition in that area for coon alone other things.I would say about 20 hunters or so and thats just the ones I know. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Re: How often do you guys catch a coon??
I hunt out of the kalama river basin and up by toutle i focus on water and food sources. i catch coons 2 out of 3 times i go and i usaly hit the woods for 6 to 8 hrs a night 2 nights a week. on a fun note my dogs had a hell of a trash chase the other morning. They started to strike hard after roading them i turned them loose and a 3 and a half mile chase was on they were barking realy choppy and it was like nothing i had ever heard they would go 2 or 3 hundered yards barking every min or two then they would hold in the same spot for 10 to 20 mins the move on after leaving the road and finding them circiling and barking they had found 3 ferell horses i shocked em and they found their way back to the rig. never chased horses befor.. wtf
