Josh,

You most certainly could add, Mr. Robbie(South Texan) and Mr. Charlie(CRA). I would be relatively sure from that whole group, that any advice should be well taken.

Take care, Willie

The young dogs in the pic's training was influenced by the fellow's mentioned above, Al Baldwin and Dewey also have my ear when discussing dogs. Have had fun with these dogs, they are progressing.

Now that I have learned to post pic's, I will put more up.

Willie. I would also like to know where David is at, If anyone knows. Please ask him to join us. Thank you. John.

It’s natural for most dogs to despise a cat. I catch a bobcat in a live trap and put a beach towel in with the cat for a day or two and let the cat go. I put the towel in a garbage bag and seal it after each use. After a couple of weeks I will catch another, sometimes the same one. I notice a DVD on training pups for coons came out using this method after I mention it for many years. I also must mention that I set written training goals and record everything in writing to the second.
Than before feeding and other times I play with the eight to ten week old pups with the towel for five or ten minutes max and they love it. The older dogs never forget it and want a pieces of the action and will start baying while you are training the pups. Soon I will make short drags and they have no problem finding it since I set them up to win. The same time I play and sit with them and I work on different commands like sit, stay and here for another five or ten minutes each day during the next few months, it does not take long since repetition is the mother of skill. If they are running towards a road, trash and just about anything else I can give the command sit or stay and they will. If they tree house cats great and I encourage them to do so. If you have an older dog that you plan to hunt with the pups now is a good time for him to join in the fun with the house cat and the older dog and pups get to know each other.
The other thing I do that I have never heard before is run a trap line without traps. Just a dirt hole bobcat set with a trail camera pointing to it. At this point if non target animals hit the bait it’s best to set a trap. Later if you need to you can use the non target traped animal for trash breaking. Once only bobcats hit the bait I keep replacing the bait. Soon some of the bobcats will start a pattern that you can time with the trail camera and just keep replacing the bait. What you are looking for is to train the bobcats to come at a specific time. Most trap sets I put where I can drive by so once I know the general time they are coming I will walk the pup to the bait and it's on. If I have a broke, trained, friendly older dog I will let him show the pups how it’s done but I will start him from the box and let the pups trail along. Rarely will I have much trouble with breaking them on trash and I have three now under two years old that get it done alone or in company. One of the young females was treed last week for at least four hours. If you are doing things correctly you can bring the towel and the dogs nose will get wet and they will salivate. (I will post some pictures when I have time.)
I am sure there are better ways it’s just the method that I use.

JTG,
Those are some really great ideas...I've kicked around the idea of putting out a lure near a road like you we're talking about with the trap line, but never done it yet. Also like the idea of using caught trash to break pups.

My two young dogs in the picture is what I am talking about. Notice the wet nose and mouth letting me know that they get it.

If one starts with good solid bred cat minded dogs that are proven producers on cat there is way less work with a pup just exposure and the rest is in the hands of the dog. Yes obediance is trained into a pup by its handler but a TRUE cat dog is born not made in my eyes, they just seem to know what to do from day one of exposure and just get better and better. So be selective on what you start with and the rest will fall into place for the most part and if it doesnt have what you are wanting dont be afraid to cull and move on. Andy
