Cat hunt

Post by Alabama Cathunter »

Well I have not posted in a while because of nothing to post but fox races until now. I got a garmin gps tracking unit and thought I would try it out.Alabama Deer season is in so I have been limited hunting. Have only ran fox for several months. Well I lost one of my best jyps this summer. She was a real good jump dog as well as keep the pressure on him type dog so anytime you lose a good one it lowers your moral for a while. I have got some young dogs that have been doing outstanding on grey fox and I couldnt wait to get them on a cat. well Sunday mourning we had got a rain. we have been real dry in south Alabama. I usually go to church on sundays but I could not help my self. Prime feed time was 5:40. I left the house at 5:00 started road hunting 4 of my hounds. The roads are packed clay and with just 3 tenths of rain it is hard to see a track. I had been road hunting for a bout 1 mile when 2 of my hounds went missing. I did not see which way they turned off the road so I stopped at the next intersection and get out the Garmin . While Im looking for my glasses I thought I heard one open about 3 or 4 hundred yds in towards the creek. I pull on down sat there about 5 to 10 min and I heard Redman deeper in. He hits it 3 or 4 times. The dogs in the box were hearing this so they were whining wanting out so I sent Dottie ,Debbie, August, And Stonewall in. Well Dot hit and started opening. Then tide, redman, bear, they all started firing at him well in just a short time it was on. I sent in 3 more 6 month old pups that I have been running fox with since they were 4 and one half months old. This was their first race on the outside. Well as luck would have it I noticed the dogs were not pulling to the north like they usually do on a fox. Well he just stayed in that ruff briars and swamp maybe it ran on about 80 acres real thick. Well Everybody that runs walker foxhounds on cat knows how a cat race sounds with 8 hounds and three pups sound. It makes you want to lay out of work, breed every dog that comes in heat. They ran this cat 1hr and 10 min. They put him in a hole. the dogs were showing treed on the garmin. I went to the dogs and they were trying to dig him out. Well this story has gone on long enough. It was a great hunt for me and I had a large time. Merry christmas everyone and good hunting. Alabama Cathunter

Enjoyed reading your post. Assume you have a pen available for running fox? That must be a real kick. Thanks Al

Great story and if you ever get a opportunity to come hunt Oklahoma, give me a shout? We don't have that many fox(mainly little grays), but we can get on some bobcats.

Always like to see and listen to other hounds other then mine all the time!
