I jus recently bought a 10 month old walker male. I got him lead broke, loading up, tracking and treeing. He's gotten very good at it but jus won't bark on a track. He trees like crazy tho. Any suggestions?

stop "tree training" and showing it caged critters and take it hunting so he learns it is His job to find them not just bark at them after you showed them to him

I've heard that a still mouth dog will put it to an open mouth dog. Do u agree?

Hey pegleg, I haven't shown him caged coons nor have I shown him where I hang the coonhide he tracks the sent finds the tree and trees it all by using his nose. I have a 10 year old nite champ I been hunting with him here and there I'm waitn for the kitten coons to get down and about b4 I take him 2 the woods again all the sals r layd up not much sent out there right now, won't b long tho!

Sounds like he may be a naturally silent track dog. If so, there is not much you can do. However, some dogs that are silent when young eventually do become open.

As far as I have been told a silent track dog doesn't do well in comp. But I used to run with an old blue female that was silent on track but could burn a tree down. Never made a comp. dog but could train the hell out of a pup. Some food for thought. You know how many hog hunters would love to have a silent on track hound.

If he does turn out to be silent,he better be independent if your gonna compete with him where you live.If he is running and treeing,quit dropping him with your old dog.He will learn alot more by himself now at his age by doing it himself than being out with another dog.

Yeah man silent dogs seem to do well on bobcats i don't think its a problem he does not strike on track and he probably will, i have a dog that does not bark on track when he is by himself but always barks when the race piks up

I have heard (from this forum) that you shouldn't be concerned if your dog is quiet when trailing a drag. Seems like it's a problem that goes away when you start chasing some real animals.

a still mouth will be find to compete just because when he barks u know to tree him so u would have to strike and tree him right away. u might not get 1st strike but u would get 1st tree and the tree points are worth more

i had a silent mouth cur dog a few years back and saw more coons than anything i ever hunted with before. he treed very few den trees and hemlocks and usually when he treed you was going to see a coon. i like seeing coons that way i dont have to wonder if anythings up there. lol

Still mouth can put the hurts on other hounds in comp hunts. I have seen a lot of me too dogs in the hunts that cant tree their own coon. If you can tree him and put the five minutes on the tree and have a closed tree before the other dogs come into him you will win.
