Sunday Cat Hunt

Post by Rod Vinson »

Ok Guys trying something new with adding photos...Hope it works. I found a track after the temp. finally started to thaw the little ice we had. The track was froze and begin to thaw and I turned out about 12 or so to strike and they could all begin to smell it a little in the road...then they finally found where it left the road and went into a clear cut that was clean except the old push up log piles and such and then they circled back towards the road and crossed the road and struck it again and went down the ditch and back into the road and they followed it til they got to a 5 way intersection and found it again going into a gum pond that was thick with bay bushes and they all left screaming. Soon they made a turn and all heck broke loose and I sent the rest to them. They were soon coming back at me in a dead cry. The cat came in the road and my buddy (9 month cur hound) saw her and made her go back like she came and he left dead behind her. They all packed up and made a couple circles then hushed...Then they fell treed. I went in and found the cat about 10 foot high in a broke off tree.. I made her come play some more as she jumped out on top of one of my females and made an escape. The dogs piled back on and cirlced about 7 or 8 more minutes and they fell treed again and the female made it up a big gum tree about 80 foot high....so I left her to run another day... total running was bout 20 minutes and alot of fun was had!! Hope you enjoy the pictures!

Nice photos, wish I had a nearby pack of running dogs to watch more often. One of my dogs has some in him, and he has traits that I like alot.

Are they open on an old feeder track? Just asking how much voice do they give on those tracks that are difficult to trail. Al

They give more voice on better tracks... I have a couple that opens on the sorry tracks and as it gets better they all start pecking on it. I trailed one last year from the first track they opened on til they jumped it was 4 miles...they crossed 2 highways and trailed 1/2 mile down one of the highways... I got in the middle of the road with flashers on to keep the traffic slowed down and I would get out and call the dogs to the side and let the traffic go by then put them back after it...lol When they jumped it (a large tom) he ran 7 or 8 minutes and went up a tree about 90 feet high... I was mad as fire with him for being no better a runner...lol

Mr. Rod,

Great story....glad we got the Pic thing figured out!

Smelling is tough when every thing is iced up. Aren't we blessed that that only happens occasionally where we hunt. I had a friend call the other day to visit while he waited for it to warm up enough for hi Hounds to smell......it was 10 below but boing to warm up to 10 above.

Full Blood Running bred Hounds who tree are a true pleasure and much more common than folks think. Your week end makes 6 Cats caught in VA and the Carolinas.....all in bad conditions and all but I ended up a tree with Running Hounds telling the world where the Cat was!

Mr. Al, those Hounds of Rods will be OPEN mouth on the Trail.....but only where they smell the Game. Usually that will be in advance of where something barked last. At a Check there is NO telling you this is where the Cat was barking, only quiet till something finds him.

The Pedigrees he mentions are Royalty to the Grey Fox Running Walker Hounds....Nose, Brains and Drive!

Dogboy, Friday the 18th I treed 2 small cats and caught 1 #26 lb tom, Sunday the 20th I treed 1 cat twice and the second time went up a 90 foot pine, Monday 21st treed a cat twice and after the second tree it went on a run about for 10 or so minutes and went into a log pile.. the cat ran from side to side in the pile like it was in a tunel (which was 30 foot or so wide) and then they pulled her out, then on the 25th it was sleeting and freezing rain and rain it bout 15 minutes and it went up a tall pine, then the 27th was this past sunday... I ran a cat every day I went during that spell.... Dogs are worn out..lol
