Stinkin' Wolves

This was one of Roy's finest days. Last year he trailed this lion on the rocky mt front for 7.89 miles. We sleded along above him a thousand feet higher and prayed that he would not bump any wolves. Six hours later he caught up to the "Blackfoot Warrior" on a willow flat in an ox bow in the river In the shadow of Chief mountain. He fought and bayed the cat for another 50 minutes before he was able to push it up the mountain into the timber and make it take refuge in a tree. Ol' Roy went toe to toe with this gnarly old tom and I was never happier to get to a tree. Jason was pretty stoked too.

Phil, You have my deepest sympathies. I was wearing your shoes not too long ago and wouldn't wish it on anyone. In time you will find enjoyment following the hounds again.

drop every wolf you see. I know of a guy in Idaho who had 2 dogs killed by wolfs and he tracked them for a day and a half and were able to kill 2 of those devil dogs.

Time for another trip down memory lane. This was a thirty plus pounder that Roy and Jolene after a long coldtrailing job.This was the second second bobcat of the day for us.
The second one was another big bobcat a couple friends treed on a school day I had to work. The dogs we loaned them were Roy and Penny. I never kept track of the numbers of cats we caught. One thing i would encourage you to do is take lots of pictures of your dogs. You will not have them forever. I regret not taking very many photos back in the eightys and nineties.

So so so sorry for your HUGE loss. This is my greatest fear!! I live on the forest service on the North Fork outside of Cody and just in the last week I have noticed the wolves are way more active than they have been all fall and winter here. A few days ago I went hunting with the dogs behind the cabin here a few miles on foot. The next morning I went back for my hike behind the cabin and wolves had trailed our tracks down to within 50 yards of my cabin! I had just let the dogs out about 30 minutes after they had been there not knowing they had been so close. I have been trying to hunt other drainages other than behind my cabin and every place I have gone I have found fresh wolf tracks. Last night I heard them howling all night long from inside my cabin and this morning when I woke up and went outside they were on a ridge howling about 100 yards from the cabin. I have no doubt they have come to get my dogs. I keep the dogs inside unless I am out with them and keep them in view at all times. I also have my .357 with me when I let them out at night to go to the bathroom. I keep bells on them as well. I am curious if you had bells on the dogs? I have been told that will keep them away for at least a short time. I know there is nothing we can do to protect our hounds 100% other than get rid of the wolves, but living in the heart of the national forest and "their" territory I am going to try to do whatever is neccessary to keep my dogs alive!! It really upsets me to hear these things happening and to see photos of hounds killed so needlessly. Sad very very sad

No answer to this problem from politicians or bureaucrats...gonna have to come from common sense people who know when, where, and how to discreetly deal with the issue!! Nothing you do will gain any sympathy from the folks who are pushing wolves down our throats! Their agenda is about the control of public lands and the wolf issue is just one of the strategies they use. The pictures of valued hunting dogs and family pets killed by wolves won't move them in the least!

After reading this story i was terrified to turn my dogs out anymore. I hate these stories. If you ever get back into hound hunting may consider reading this. Phil, I am so sorry for your guys lost. This problem has to stop. Im newer to the sport and im scared to death to lose dogs.

I have been hunting with Phil some over the last 2 seasons and I am currently out of town. If I would've been around I would've probably been in on the hunt too and lost a dog or two. One thing I can say is I haven't hunted with anybody else that is more careful about turning loose around wolves than Phil, so this didn't happen due to carelessness.
I hadn't hunted with Roy in his prime but even though he was older he was in good health and a good solid dog and would've probably been a good dog for several more years. In hunting with Phil it was obvious that Roy was a special dog for him. As far as I know I had the honor of being under Roy's last tree.
