Whats wrong with Red Bones?

Postby JOKER09 » Mon Jan 28, 2013 12:43 am

Really new to coon hunting but from what i see a lot of coon dogs they are mostly Walkers, Blue, Black and Tans, crosses, etc. I do see Red bones here and there but not so much, just wondering why Red bones are not as common as other dogs?

Not a dam thing wrong with them ! I have one and have hunted with a few guys that run them as well ... The reason I see is not as many breeding any more, mostly in Wisconsin area there was a few guys in Montana but haven't seen or heard of them in awhile.

By far the best dog I've ever owned was a Piute Mt. Redbone. Smarter then any other hound I've ever seen anywhere. Go back and look at just about every picture ever posted on this site that has multiple dogs in it. They all have one common thing in them, at least one red dog. Wish there were more of them out there.

my buddy has run red dogs, and from what I have seen, not a thing wrong with them for coons or cats. great dogs, but I am sure they are like the rest of the breeds, some are good, some are great, and some just don't have it.

I asked because Red Bones looks great and smart with lots of drive but not really common, is it because they are too expensive or what? I am a jagd guy but if i ever get a hound red bones would be at the top of the list!

Haha from what I have learned it doesnt matter what the breed if the dog has a good background they wont be cheap but i havent noticed redbones being anymore expensive than any other breed

I'm sure there are great ones out there but the ones I have been around lack track speed.

There are a lot of good redbones out there. A lot of good ones not too far from you. I've had all the registered breeds except a plott. These red dogs are what works for me the best. There are good and bad in all breeds. I've been having a good season out here. When I get a chance I'll get the pictures up. I run bobcat, lion, and coon with my redbones and they do good. Can't run bears here but I've sold pups to bear hunters and they like them. Even had one pup go to Texas to run hogs and she did good. Mine don't lack any speed and are very smart and easy to train. I've had real good success with the redbones I raise and hunt. As with any breed find a line that suits you and you'll be fine. Many different lines within the breed and some have very different characteristics. Good luck if you ever try one.

They make great coon dogs . I have two redbones but when hunted together they get out of country and leave my walkers behind.

My best bear dog is a redbone. The grittiest fur pullin dog I've ever had. He shortens up a ton of bear races.

between the book movie where the red fern grows and the fact that they are a sharp looking dog i think it has hurt the breed to some degree . lots of redbones got sold for the fact that they were redbones and nothing else. every time i see redbone pups forsale they have a 600 dollar price tag here in maine .this with parents that may have never ran anything in their life.you can buy other hound breeds here in maine for 150 to 350 a pup out of good hunters. this is my opinion based on what i have seen in maine ,and no offense to those of you who have worked hard to produce hard hunting redbones. these are the people that hunters need to buy from . do your homework .
