Hunt when you can!

Post by Alabama Cathunter »

I got up Saturday mourning about 4:00 to go hunting. Prime feed time was around 6:00 am. More rain was suppose to blow in around 9:00am. Well you go when you can, so I loaded the dogs and hit the road. Overcast, wind had started to blow a little but I had a itch to try and scratch. I have way more grey fox than cats but 6 or 8 times a year I usually jump Mr. Bobcat so thats just extra icing on the cake when it happens. I put the jump dogs out and down the road they went. About one half a mile down the road the dogs got real busy. It was just breaking day. I pulled up side of where the dogs were really busy got out with my flash lite. All I could see was a coon track. Well about that time the dogs started opening I said surly they are not trailing this coon. Well they were going the same way the coon was going and the track getting better. I looked again. WE had had 10 inches of rain 4 days before but that clay road had got crusty hard to track on. I picked up shocker and was getting concerned about what was happening. The dogs were trailing better and better I said I cant believe this trailing a coon. Surly there is a cat track that I cant see. They had been trailing by now thirty min or so. Trailing good. I had pulled down the road with the dogs. They turned started up the creek so it was good and day light so I pulled back up there where the coon tracks were. Got out to look again. I looked and looked could not see anything but a coon track. Disgusted I started toward the truck and just as I was about to get in I looked back and there it was. One front foot track of Mrs Bobcat. What a relief! The dogs were getting better and better trailing. Well my 2 year old dog Stonewall had done what he is getting good at. He had swung out about half to three forth of a mile down the road and hit up under the cat. Well it took about 4 or 5 min and dogs started falling in on him the race was on.I jumped this cat in Dec ran her for about 1 hr and 20 min and put her in a hole. Well I had a total of 11 dogs. Three being 8 months old. Anybody that has hunted down south knows a cat is going to the thickest ruff he can find with hope of having water to swim in also. Well the cat swam some you could hear the dogs in the water. They would go about 3 or 4 hundred yards up the creek then they would come back to the briars and gallberry . then back up the creek. the cat would squat then go out the back door. thats when those pups would see the cat and would scream like you were beating them with a water hose. Well they ran her for 1 hr and 10 min. She didnot make it back to her hole this day. Well good hunting everyone Im tired of typing. P.S. It was so thick where they caught the cat I had to call a coon hunting buddy to come to the woods and blow me out with the truck horn. The sun was behind the clouds and I could not see out of the canopy of thick about 10 ft over my head.

Alabama thanks for sharing. Did those running dogs tree and hold the tree? My hunting friend tells me he thinks Grey fox makes for a better race than cat. It would be nice to have an area full of greys with good access. Never thought in my past years I would think that way. But, there are some true dyed in the wool cat hunters in this area who are now running greys, because cats are at times hard to find. Al

Al, I cut my teeth on greys in 1978. but if I had plenty of cats that is all I would run. But your answer my dogs dont tree. They might if they were put in there with a tree dog I dont know.
