Dog is walking stiff and limping

Post by azhoundin87 »

She is 5 years old and just started really hunting her again. She ran a lion up and down 4 days ago before it treed and put a total of 12 miles on that night and is now limping and slow to use her feet. I don't see any cuts or sores on feet. How long should I keep her down before hunting her again. She wants to go but I think I should wait.

If the dog means that much to you I'd of took the time to get her back in shape by roading her a little every day . being that in your post you said you just started hunting her again. You run a out of shape dog hard you better be ready to walk to the bottom of a canyon when she lays up on you and carry her out. Leave her home and make one of the others step up if she isn't ready. Its hard to know without seeing the dog... and even then its hard to know because dags can't tell you whats wrong. Cheak her out for swelling, brusing ect maybe she had a fall. Feel up her legs and feet ect looking for tender spots.

One thing dogs don't fake it so she must be hurting some. It could just be sore muscles from over reaching herself in that case you should get her out for a few short walks, don't need to run. While on these walks if you notice her walking good after you have gone a ways then its likly just muscle sorness and moving will shorten the recovery time.

Maybe, you have read where I/ve post this before, but, I have experienced very good luck using Tuf Foot on my hounds feet. I have used it a week or so before hunting them after a long lay off with good results. Also it is very good for the sore feet problem you are describing. I have nothing to gain by telling you about TufFoot just trying to help you. You may not see any sores on the feet, but, she could have a stone bruse from running in the rocky ground and those are hard to see. I can assure I have had a stone bruse myself & they are painful. Have not see her feet so that is just a guess on my part. Good luck Al

Use it a couple times a day for about a week before hunting after a lay off, and as needed there after. I have found Tuf Foot does not help a dogs feet if they have a fungus foot problem. Doubt that would be a problem in Arizonia, but sure can happen in southwestern Oregon. Good luck Al
