2 good hogs, vest takes a beating

Post by longshot »

We were collaring the dogs and noticed a nice boar cross the corner of a coastal field. We drove the mule accross the field and dropped 1 cur and 1 Jagd on the spot we last saw him and they were off like lightning!

They found him and got him stopped about 100yards in the thicket. Both dogs were hammering in steady rythm.

Dennis, Ron and I walked the catch dogs within a few yards and cut loose. Rhino my Amerigo(Ab\Dogo) went screaming in and reached the hog and met him with a bone shattering clash Rhino was tossed through the air(90+lb dog). He hit the ground coming back for more and locked the ear on the 2nd attempt. Boar weighed 239lbs. Rhino was hit hard on the intial impact and his vest has a cut through the kevlar layer but he didnt take a scratch. The vest saved either a lot of staples and PenC or his LIFE!

Made 1 more loop and Rons dog Zoey struck a group of hogs but the group broke. Ginger went to honor her and shortly she found and bayed a good sow. My Jagd and Darla(DCs dog) honored and they caught out before we released a catch dog.

We decided to call it a day with 2 big hogs on the ground and no cut dogs.

I have 3 of the vests you are talking about from Uglydog. I have had 2 of them for 5 years and been on almost every hog since I got them. They are a little stiff after they get wet and dry but a hog has never punched through mine either........GOOD VEST FOR THE MONEY!!

On this hog the vest was a Los Cazadores Vest made especially for dogo shaped dogs. The yellow was my choice of outer covering. It is just a nylon corudra, then a layer of woven kevlar backed with felt is in the middle layer and the inside lining is a true ballistic nylon. It is still on trial but looking better now.........LOL

This hog went through the yellow and Kevlar but didnt make it past the inside ballistic nylon. (I will post pics of the cut when I find my digital camera, I left it in my buddies truck on a hunt)

Nice hog bud ! Yes, I think those red ballistics are the best vests made. I just ordered 2 more for the hounds. I got one of my best dogs cut up on a bad one the other day. I usually dont run vests on the hounds, but I am going to start.

Maybe you can get away with it in your country but I feel in the humidty here; unless it was winter the running dogs would over heat wearing a vest. somtimes they overheat w\o a vest in the hig heat\humidty months.

I only vest the dogs that stay in the truck or on a lead and then walk them into the bay.

If you use a 1\2 length it would offer more mobilty and maybe less chance of heat stroke.

Let me know how that works on your hounds.

i am going to try it on my roughest bay dogs. I know it is going to be hot on them, and I wont do it during the real hot part of the summer, but I got to try something as I am getting some good hounds cut up, and I am trying to slow the problem down some. I never ran it on the hounds before, because I always felt that a vest would slow them down, plus the risk of getting hung up in the brush, ect, but I am going to try it now.

I did talk to a guy that hunts grain fields down by the coast(south of Houston) and it is Humid as anyplace on earh there!!!

He swears he runs a vest on EVERY dog he puts on the ground and expects them all to catch like a bulldog. Swears they dont heat stroke and he hunts 3-4nights a week.

I guess it can be done........... 8)

Check out http://www.uglydogranch.org They have a good selection of good vests.

Lonshot,
those P&P vests, those are built by Larry Paris in OK right? If they are those vests are worth there wieght in gold to me, for my bay dogs. I went out on a limb and baught a vest from AUS from Basalt cut collars & vests, you guys need to take a look at those there great for the bulldogs, It saved my bulldog, I think if would of had any other vest on that day, I wouldn't be feedin him tonight, the breast Plate took a beatting he took 350 stiches and reconstructive knee surgery, but he live and has heeled up and ready to go. Any way back to the P&P vests, that man makes a great saddle and his vest are bullet prof, I have only had one get knocked all the way through. Here a pic of the one from AUSImage
In all the years they have been makein these over there they said know one had ever had knocked all the way through, I got it done three times on the same hog LOL

Go to www.boardogs.com and Basalt advertses on there, There called Basalt Pig Collars, there double tough, made of three layers of fire hose, and the collar and breast plate are one peace. I am real impressed with'em and there open tops so the dogs dont get as hot,and are open on the bottom so it lets the dogs move alittle better, but on the down side, there is little protection on the belly and thats were my bulldog took all of the damage, so I'm modifying the vest alittle.

There is not much protection in the belly becuase that is not a likly place they will get hit unless the are a short bodied pit like catchdog.

My vest get hit 90% of the time in the chest and the other part of the time it is in the shoulder. I have never had a cut in the belly side of the vest. I understand that things get crazy and they could get hit anywhere! NEVER KNOW
