what the heck is going on

Post by mohawk »

It happened again today, this is the third time it has happened to me this year  I get withen 40 yards from the tree... and off and running they go. Today the dogs were treed on a bobcat and after a grueling 10000 yard walk up hill in god awful snow, I get about 40ish yards from the tree and they take off screaming on track and sad to say they catch it again, so is it that common for bobcat to jump tree ? And yes I am sure it was in the tree because I got a dog from j.c. that he says wouldnt tree very well but will always be under the tree when I get there, and she was treeing her heart out... so, any thoughts. Also just to clear things up, when they leave the tree barking they are not back tracking. Thanks for your thoughts... Brian

Cats in my country don't jump much without some help...maybe 1 a year but they usually get it treed again and the cat will stay and be there when I get there...

Well this is just a thought, but if that dog that JC said did not bark treed was treeing hard, I would suspect the cat was low and the dogs could see it. Or maybe that dog has decided to become a tree dog? My experience most bobcat don/t jump out on thier own, but if one is low in the tree somtimes they can get nervious and jump. Al

yea after talking to a buddy tonight he brought to my attention that maybe i have a dog that is grabbing a tree to soon, he could be right because there has been one of the three dogs at everyone of those trees, jc dog wasnt there earlier in the year when it was happening. Think that I will leave the one home for a few times and see if the problem dosent fix itself.

i garrentee if frosty was barking she was looking at a cat. it might have been on a rock or up a small tree and one of the dogs climbed the tree and jumped it out. when they left out of there were they jumped . u said they were treeing for 3 hours . so they must have left out of there jumped. they wernt false treeing if frosty was treeing .

When you get to the abandoned tree on these three races, are you seeing the cat track into the tree and leaving the tree? I assume you are in snow.
Also, what kind how big are the trees that they are treeing on?
Lastly, on today's race when you said "sadly" they caught it again, did you go to that tree and find a cat in it?

Was it a bobcat when they caught it again?

this is something i was tought when i was about 4 going to trees it may not be the same as situation you are having but are you comming in on the under side of the tree are you making noise sound stupid but i have whitness cats bail from those to items. as well as the cat go up the tree bail out and the dogs didnt know the diffrence does not happen alot but have had cats bail two or three times a year and seems its the ones that are jumped out by folks.

now i am no expert by any means but i have seen enough cats to say that in almost 20 yrs of hunting i have only had 3 jump the first one was just plain suicidal cause he jumped into 7 or 8 dogs and did not last long. the other ones both jumped on single dog catches and i just chalked it up as i was more scary then the dog( boy where they wrong both died quick) so with out being there i would say you have a dog a little trigger happy on the treeing part and is pulling your other dogs to him or her. if thats the case thats next to impossible to correct for me but maybe some of these ole timers on here have a solution good luck

I can't really say much about bobcat jumping tree haven't seen any jump or attempt to jump and haven't really Hurd of much jumping tree around here but I have had quite a few fox jump tree and lately about one out of 5 jump tree on me and even if they have been treed for a wile they still jump. it's usually when I'm getting close to the tree and I just have to wate for it to tree again not saying this is what is happening to you and we are talking about 2different critters just adding my 2 cents and since you are having them take off when you get close makes me think that it's jumping but at the same time I don't know Ur cats hounds or the country you hunt so I could be completely wrong.let us know what you figure out. Good luck and happy hunting :beer
