Telemetry vs. GPS
Im looking into buying a tracking system. At the moment I coon hunt but im looking into getting into bobcat and bear hunting, so im at a dilema about what to get. I like how with a gps you can see exactly where the dogs are, but ive been told that when you are in the mountains you lose signal quite a bit and they dont reach as far. though with telemetry you can reach out farther but you dont have the pro of being able to know the exact spot of the dog. If you would please give the pros and cons of both and which one in your opinion would be the best for me. Thanks

Re: Telemetry vs. GPS
Telemetry is like navigating in the dark without a light compared to gps. Just the security of pin point accuracy and knowing where all your dogs are and not guessing like with Telemetry makes it a no contest. Your fuel savings alone after one years time will allow you to just toss the gps in the garbage and replace them if you kept track of how sloppy standard telemetry is compared to gps, that is if you hunt a lot.
Gps is responsible for those living in wolf country keeping dogs alive. You know exactly where your dogs are and no bounce signals to mess with, the telemetry analogy of "I think the dogs are there"....Wolves still get a dog but your odds are greatly reduced....When a young dog breaks off on trash beyond hearing or sight, you can look on your screen and stop the dog with light juice or tone mode, many times you can connect the dog back to the race....
How about when your dogs line out heading cross country and you must drive around twenty miles to get back on them, as you are pulling away, you see a young dog just got tossed out of the race so you stop and pick the dog up and then drive around......This is compliments of Garmin....Gps is a tool like trash breaking e-collars, you can hunt with out them but your life is sure made easier with them....As for dropping the reception on gps, most issues have been resolved. I live where it snows and rains and if a problem would crop up it would be right here...The list just goes on and on.....Telemetry has one huge advantage. Battery life.....I just think you build better, more confident dogs with Tri -tronics lr e-collars and gps!

I think most guys who hunt in big country and really care about their dogs run both.

Re: Telemetry vs. GPS
I'm running both but have been considering, dropping the telemetry. I mostly hunt on foot in areas that dont get hunted much. Any of you guys just running GPS?
Re: Telemetry vs. GPS
The issue im having with telemetry is picking up al the nuisance radio signals in this area from all the pain in the ass law enforcement that set around emitting enough signals to produce testicular cancer in the state of Cal. It over rides any but the closest collars in most places and even then you can really narrow it down past 180° i believe the bands most collars opperrate is on or close to a good many stronger commercial/gov. Transmitters and easily swamped. Im not convinced gps has the range id be comfortable relying on. But a guy needs to use somthing to help locate dogs before issues arise

I just run the alpha but i have good road system if i was going to invest in only one it would be garmin but thats for you to decide.
Re: Telemetry vs. GPS
We are loosing the gps signal in snow storms. Is anyone else having problems? This quite stressful by busy highways and I imagine would not be much help in wolf country.
