Does any one know how long people have been rigging dogs for? I know a older man who says
" I've been hunting dogs before there was any rig dogs."

I started training dogs to rig bears in 1963. Later found that some Michigan bear hunters had been riggin em before that. We used to call the dogs strike dogs , but some young hunter corrected me and said they are rig dogs. I'm usually the last one to figure out how to do somthing anyway.Interesting question though.

I invented them about 30 years ago. Yep twas me! LOL! Well if Al Gore can claim he invented the internet I should be able to claim rigs dogs. LOL!
Just kidding. I use to ride around with an old trapper when I was alittle kid and that has been many moons ago. He had an old Oldmobile and he had a brindle cur dog named Jiggs. Jiggs would rude with his head out the window like so many town dogs. If Jiggs ever let out a shreik, and started hopping around Leo would pull the old Olds over and cut him loose, and he would come up with a coon or a cat track every time. He didn't call him a rig dog he just my car dog.

Hey Mike ya brought back same ole 56-57 yrs memorys for me as a 13-14 yr oldSonny Kendricks and Boogie or Mike would pull up on a saturday morneing too the ranch headqts and say (jackie ya want too go run a fox or coon) ! I`d look at that old 2 door coupe car with the back seat pulled out of it and hed have his 3 black Mo. dogs an 1 flagg tailed walker in there all looken out at me and they wasbounceing round and excited/feet up on the glass and my mom an dad said go-on have fun ! I had too crawll in and ride huddled up with the dogs/sometimes he had 2-3 pups under a yr old also alonf !hahahaha
We`d go too the tuley padds along the slue ditch it was maybe a 5 mile long slue with a dirt one lane rd along sideof it/ let me tell ya them dogs was looken, winden and a bundle of explosive noise and eager beavers!
I didn`t know it was riggen, I just thought it was part of the fun to get ta go along. The dogs accepted me as one of the pack and when they smelled game or even saw it out the windows scurreing off/ they screamed and got wound-up and looked at me as if thinken come-on kidd get with it here !? I`d forgotten all about back in those times Mike, amazeing, well it made my afternoon!

yup what larry said--- i can still remember first time i had one -late 70s
ol blue was in back seat of my chevelle-----windows open -- let a roar out and jumped out of car--- going quite fast -- treed a coon--
back in the 70s -- an old man--(thinking back ,he was about as old as i am now lol )-- told me the first rig dog he had was a skunk dog -- he said at one time ,skunk hides were worth more than coon ---so they hunted skunks--
same guy told me that one time, coon hides were up , he mortgaged his house to buy a coondog -
he used to tell all kinds of stories like that -he was an old dog trader -
but i bought best coondog i ever owned from him lol
