Coon/Hog Hunting with Same Dog

Postby OkieHoundsman91 » Sat Mar 09, 2013 7:36 pm

I'm fairly new to hunting with dogs. I am thinking of getting two new pups and plan to casual hunt them.

My question is do any of you guys hunt coon/squirrel and ALSO bay hogs with the same dog? I know there are plenty of multi game hunters using the same dogs, but training a young dog to hunt both treeing and non treeing game is where I need some advice! Would it be better to start a pup on coon/squirrel or pigs first? I don't plan on free casting these dogs onto pigs or hunting them from the truck. I'll be putting them on tracks. So would it be a good idea to start them as a squirrel dog and then start setting them on pigs later?

I'm just looking to get these dogs to hunt close and silent and to check in every 20 minutes or so. My goal is for these dogs to know when they get turned loose in the woods early in the morning that we're hunting squirrels and when its evening and the cut collars are put on, its time to bay a pig.

Is this impossible or not worth the headaches? Thanks for the help!

I hunt coon, hogs, bear and lion with the same dogs, that is not a problem at all, the difference is that any time I go out I am willing to run any of those 4 species.

I think where you will have a problem is getting your dog not to run a hog in the morning or getting them not to chase a squirrel in the evenings. It can be done but it will take a lot of time and patience. If you have a place with squirrel but no hogs and a place with hogs and no squirrel that will make it a lot easier, but if you hunt an area with both in the same place then you have your work cut out for you.

Good luck
