Post by artrodex »

What make a dog tree game? I see many dogs around some tree some don't others very good hunter and others culls.

But i make same question to myself why some dogs tree and others no what make the dog hunt and tree is his nose, brain, combinations of all, use of sight to locate game?

I go put this video as an example this jagdterrier came from europe few month ago what make them tree a squirrel if never was selected for that just desire of pursue the game?

Genetics.
Retrievers were bred to retrieve.
Pointers were bred to point.
Tree hounds were bred to tree.
Some dogs learn or are easily taught to do tasks outside of their breeding. Start breeding dogs with similar traits and you start to solidify that trait in them.
Dogs that do not do what they are genetically bred to do are culls. A tree dog that doen't tree is a cull to that standard, but doesn't mean they aren't good at other traits that they were bred for.
Some people use types of tree bred hounds for hog hunting. There is no need for treeing traits, but their other strong traits like trailing and baying make them good at their job.
