Sure glad it finally dried out.
Enough of them spring winds have hit the high desert and we have some firm bare ground again. Been really nice to get abourd old Gus and make some miles with the hounds. Caught a big female Good Friday and the dogs did well, a few cuts and scratches however. Saturday got on another female and trailed her till a big tom came thru . Funny but how scent is it messed things up for a bit and I know his track was at least two days older but the dogs sure wanted to try him. I pulled them cus it was getting dark, and I knew they were not going to catch either of them old tracks, and still a 10 mile ride to the truck but they gave it what they had, and it was nice to be out horseback and out of that dang mud. We saw maybe 500 mule deer and over 100 elk that day and lots of bald eagles and different hawks. Hawks are strange you think you have seen all of them and then one with a different color will pop up. We sat and watched one in a pine about 30 feet away and he was a brown coloro with small white flecks or spots running thru it. Very pretty!

Sure enough Stephan but the ground is super out in the woods right now for bare ground work. No frost to speak of, and stable on top a little puffy, and underneath still sufficient moisture to help hold scent. After I caught that female on Good Friday I went again the next day and got on a super tom but it was old but amazing to watch those dogs be able to get some of it on the rocks brush and shade spots and move it between scrapes . Now that is not real trailing on at least a three day old track on bare ground but it is moving along the line and being able to carry the line. No chance of catching a tom like that unless he made a big kill and gorged himslef and layed up right by it, which he didn't but still fun. He will be back around and I will load old Gus and the dogs and go calling on him one more time.
What's it like down on the ranch now?
