Wow... to Cat hunters

By reading the majority of these posts you would think that acquiring and training up a decent hound is some kind of rocket surgery that takes 40 years of experience to achieve any success at.These aren't complicated concepts here guys,it's just dogs chasing stuff.

Yah, no kidding. Real Jedi Knight stuff. Dogs, are dogs, are dogs. Given they have brains, physical ability, and some instinct you get out what you put in them.

When i was 8-10 years old my folks bought me a beagle pup. That pup went everywhere with me including pheasant hunting. My buddy's and i shot a lot of birds over that dog. I started hunting him at night and started catching coon regularly with him too. On several occasions while pheasant hunting we shot both red and gray fox out in front of him. I couldn't of been more than 10 years old when we became successful. One of us had to be a hell of a trainer.

pete, as for dogs are dogs that is true to a point but believe me you will up your odds pretty fast if you have a proven line of bobcat dogs anyone on here that disagrees is full of it rather it be registered or grade. Most serious hunter have breed or no of a strain that works for them in their area. And yes GREAT bobcat dogs are born not made. This meening that the dog has all the right traits breed into them yes they still ave to be trained and hunted but things just come more natural for these dogs and yes these dogs are very rare . Most cat hounds have been made but most houndsmen that have been into it for years and are comitted to the sport have their personal preforance as to what strain work well for them. Andy

I bet if you were to read this thread from back to the front while listening to Pink Floyd, we would all be good trainers,have perfectly bred dogs,catch every cat we turn out on and everybody on here would get along and be happy! Na,that wouldn't be any fun. Lol

Wow was Pink Floyd another famous cat hunter and trainer from the Pacific North West?? Must have really been a legend to be able to accomplish such a feat.

Sorry didn't mean to pick on anyone that wasn't around. And was just informed that the real legend in that part of the country was CAT STEVENS!! But he aint around either so can't pick on him either.

Merlo, can/t be sure but believe you are for real. When you explained two of those dogs were over a year old when you got them & had been trained on coon, made your success seem more normal. Also could be a big reason why one of those treed the first cat, you put it on, with your help, after your friends dog rigged the track. In my opinion you had more help than you explained in the beginning. But, easy for me to misunderstand things on this computer. But anyway congrats again and good job. I didnt work with the walker on being gun shy cause I just picked up a 10 week old pup so I knew all my time was gonna be put in the new pup. The Walker was a good dog and the place I got her from was horrible she seem'd to like being a pet more then being out in the woods she hunted hard and did everything right you could just see she liked being in a house getting attention so I sold her to a family wanting a pet... My Redbone was also very gun shy he was the only hound I had at the time so I worked him and got him over being gun shy now he comes running to the sound of gun fire. I have never worked with a dog that couldnt be broke from being gun shy I havent worked with to many dogs that were but the few I have got over the noise... Breaking a dog on being gun shy should be the same way you introduce them to gun fire.. JMO...
