Dogs have a pack mentality when you whip one the other one will pile in to help you beat up the other dog. I never owed a dog that didn't fight to protect his food. I agree with the posts on here that they can probably be broke not to fight over food but I never did that with my dogs. My dogs are all fed seperately. When I have raised pups and when they were weaned I would keep them in a kennel together until they started fighting then I would split them up. I would definetily not be culling pups over food fights.
I agree with you 100%

Being able to feed your dogs together shouldn't be a big deal. There was a bunch of bad advice in this thread but as it transitions to a bobcat philosophy site, that's to be expected. Tritronics and dog fights don't work. It almost always makes it worse. Just because one guy doesn't care if his dogs fight over food, it doesn't mean that's the norm. I don't know any experienced hunters who put up with that. I would feed them together and at the very first hint of aggression, put a whoopin' on the culprit. If it wasn't fixed quickly, I'd cull. I mean less than a week. Chances are, one dog is the trouble maker. Figure out who it is and fix the problem. Or you could read a dog psychology book like Dewey suggested. .....

Haha ! I'm good if I wanted to read a book I wouldn't be asking experienced hunters. It's the runt of the two that jumps on the other one .i got it figured out now. But yeah I think this website is becoming more of a teaching class than a " share your hunting story " . But thanks everyone for all the advice !

The reading the book part was tongue in cheek. Everyone knows that houndsmen can't read. Unless of course there are lots of pictures. Haha I just figured with the modern houndsman being all in touch with his feminine side (no offense to our great philosophers of the Pacific northwest) maybe a couple had figured out how to read.

Nothing wrong with bobcat philosophy while the season is closed. As someone with a natural entitlement to my feminine side, and who WRITES as well as reads and hunts and has a master's degree in philosophy, I guess I'm on the correct thread... This whole thing makes more sense now that we know the troublemaker is the runt. He needs to assert himself to earn his brothers' respect because he is little. We all know people like that. This problem may correct itself if the runt catches up in size, which he's gonna need extra food to do. My dogs may chase bears, but they are house dogs. I can put the roasting pan on the kitchen floor and they will share it for awhile, although the dominant dog eventually crowds the less dominant one away from the best part. We had exactly one fight early on, shortly after I brought the younger dog home. He nearly lost an ear in the process, but they established who is who and they are best buds now. I did plenty of yelling for awhile, but neither one got whooped by me--they settled it between themselves, with me intervening only when things got rough. I would make children share. Dogs don't understand "sharing." They do understand pleasing their human. If you intervene every time they quarrel, they'll get the idea you don't want them fighting. Eventually. It takes work. If you don't want to do the work, sell the troublemaker. He'll do better with a fresh start in new surroundings. Hate to cull a dog for fighting with his big brothers. Just get him away from those brothers.
I agree with all of yal . Break it now before it moves from the feed bowl to the tree. Like some of yal said don't put up with even a growl . I don't want to cull a dog for this at all. My only main concern is not the food bowl it's more of at the tree treeing with other people's dog. Hate to be kicked out of my group cause of one dog fighting .

I never said that I didn't care that my dogs fight over food. When I am in hunting camp during feeding time my dogs are all loose and I feed them all with seperate bowls and I don't have fights as I am there to make sure they don't growl etc. I have hunted with a lot of experienced hunters and I have yet to see anybody's dogs share a dog bowl. I am a firm believer that you can break dogs to all eat out of the same bowl if you cull enough and spend enough time training but I just don't. Dogs can trained to do a lot things including circus tricks. Maybe some on here have even broke there male dogs to share a female in heat? I don't have any tree fights and the only time I have dog box fights is if I accidently bring along a female that is starting to get into heat.
Oh no I never have a dog fight in the box unless its over a female coming into to heat. I'm not saying this dog would straight jump on another at the tree but like more or less nip at it when all the dogs are on the tree treeing . Most dogs just keep treeing some of the older dogs will bite back . Not saying this has anything to do with it but 90% of fights I have a plott has started it . Theses pups are half plott half walker . But I have nothing against plotts I like them

Am I missing something... Beating the dogs with a hose, shooting them if they don't straighten out in a week, shock collars... Why would you not just separate them? They are 5 months old, it's sibling rivalry, very common. Ya don't put up with the fighting but if there is something so easy as separating them why not?
Same thing if I have a double sided dog box and two of my males tend to be growly with each other in close quarters they go in opposite sides. Easy as pie.
Some guys run Hounds to hunt Lions and Bears.... I hunt Lions and Bears so I can run Hounds!
