The Gathering/Grampa Jones/Old Rattler
The Gathering/Grampa Jones/Old Rattler
Ever heard the song Old Rattler by Grampa Jones? He actually had at least three songs where he talks about Rattler.
We are sure hoping we can get some of the 70 and 80 year old cat hunters to talk a little bit in a meeting setting there at the gathering
If it works out, I will call the meeting with singing Ol' Rattler. I want some verses from you though. Acording to Grampa Jones, the verses dont even have to be about Rattler. Here are a couple he sings:
"Grandma had a yeller hen we set her, as you know.
We set her on three buzzard eggs and she hatched out one old crow."
And another:
Grampa had a muted cow; mutation when she's born.
It took a jay bird 40 years to fly from horn to horn.
He's got verses about Rattler, but mostly have to do with coon. We need some verses for his bobcat hunting excellence.
"Ol'Rattler was a good old dog, blind as he could be.
but every night at supper time, I believe that dog could see"
"Rattler was a friendly dog, he was so good and kind. He never seen a stranger, 'cause of course you know he's blind"
"One day I seen a coon a climbin up a tree. I called old Rattler, come git him down for me.
But Rattler wouldn't do it because he liked that coon. I seen them walking paw in paw later by the light of the moon"
How about some verses about some of the 'cat hunting legendary figures like JC?
Just two or more lines that rhyme in the above rhythm!

David, See how this works.....I call it Ode to Mr. Al!,
In the Land of tall Timber and taller Peaks.
Lived a Hound who chased Cats who were limber and pulled Sneaks.
A Hound whose Master got Thinner and Thinner.
As the Hound made his own name, he got better and better soon his master became quite the Skinner.
The Canyons and Mountains with Sound would Ring.
As after the Shorttail Ole Skinner would Sing.
That Glorious music in the woods still resounds.
As Ole Skinner's offspring can still be Found!

Ol JC had a hound dog that showed him many a cat in the tree. He sent him to Merlo to teach him to read. The dog was a quick learner i heard everyone say, and it wasnt to long till he was on the ol BGH.
That ol hound studied hard and learned all the lore, it wasnt to long and he could catch no more. He tried and tried all his new learned tricks, but none of that stuff could match a cats witt.
Out of frustration and fear of losing his home, he went back to his beginning and his old ways he did hone, and the next thing you know, he was catchn those cats and jerkn a bone.

As night time draws on us , and the critters start to move.
Young man jon warner is starting to snooze.
Jc loads his dogs and heads to warners spot.
Fast out of sleep is warner , with the sound of a gun shot.
Knowing its over and his big cat is dead, he rolls his ass over and goes back to bed.
Jc has done it he has killed the fantum cat. It is so big he cant get it on his back.
He ties it to ringer and wendy ,the best of the bunch,
and mushes them home for now its time for lunch.

David , I think your spell checker messed up, mine does that all the time and prints out words that aren't what I intended.
( Grandpa had a muted cow, a mutation when she was born. It took a Jay bird forty years to fly from horn to horn.)
Should be muley in place of muted and mutation.
Muley animals are hornless just in case someone gives a flip.

I can make 'em go and I can make 'em Whoa !
God makes 'em do.
I'll take Jesus, you can have the field

It wasnt a spell checker that messed up it was my ears and trying to make sense out of what I was hearing. Glad you cleared that up. So "Grampa had a muley cow, she was muley when she was born. Took a jay bird 40 years to fly from horn to horn." OK so she was born without horns, and when she grew up without horns that is why it took the jay bird so long to go from one horn to the other. I might have to stick with dogs. This is just over my head.

Pickin on me, I do have to say, Revenge will be served sweeter that way.
Over the mountains, then up through the tree’s. A pack of cat hounds clearly are tree’d
Who is that? No, it just cant be. That guy sure looks like Warner to me.
Well that cant be right, Its Warner no doubt, But he said he was sleepy and not going out.
Then that’s when it hit me and the panic set in. Silently he’s been hunting, training and putting his time in.
My name is Jc. And I’m trying to figure out. What will it take to find a dog, Warner’s dogs cant sling out.

Dang, you guys are song writers in the rough. I like the raw material, but some of the lines will have to stop the music for awhile so the number of words can fit in. Some of the lines are perfect, and some will be tough to fit into a song. I love the stories though, and we will keep working with it till we can sing it.
It is tough cause you cant hear the song in your head to fit the lyrics into. Do a search on youtube for grampa jones Old Rattler. Listen to it and try to fit your lyrics into it. I can take what you have and do that to it, but would rather you did it cause you are a lot more colorful than me with your stories. JC's first effort is almost song ready so that is pretty amazing.
Dont quit on me. lets get these polished up before that night in the big arena. I can see it now under the big lights "HELLO POWERS!!!!" and the crowd goes wild. "HERE IS A SONG WRITTEN BY JC!!!" And the crowd roars to their feet with cell phones lit up.
I like the song about Skinner too. A dog with a name like Skinner really needs to have a song written about him.
Mark, that song is almost there too! Only thing it needs is lines in pairs. Each verse starts out with a good pair. Just go to you tube and sing your lyrics with grampa and you will get what it needs.
Keep the ideas coming. I dont know how we will split up all the money from record deals and stuff, but we can work that out later.
OK just saw Warner5's song. This is getting good. Might have to have them singing back and forth to each other. What a concept. Dang.

Re: The Gathering/Grampa Jones/Old Rattler
Oh man, that is great!
I am flexible, but mostly want to see if we can get a story or two out of some of the older hunters there. We all die some day. They will also. For many of us this might be our only chance to see them and hear them speak. I am just thinking a song like this might be good at the beginning of a time like that to call people in.
Maybe even earlier than six, to give more time if needed. If we use the same space as a band would be using, we will need to be out of their way for their set-up unless they get all sound checked ahead of time.

JC, you sittn on a galvanized bucket and fartn hardly qualifies as a band. But warner says if has hair he can ride it and if has a tune he can sing to it. You mite talk dewey into playing the gut bucket. Should be an interesting concert!

JC if you are serous about the band, unless rules have changed, you will need a special permit for that from the Parks Director & must be approved by the County Commissioners. Also Sharol told me Oregon Cycle was suppose to be here on the 15 & 16 June. You might want to check out if the shelter is available. Also just so those planning to attend know, there are no gas station in p owers that has gas. And watch out for all those traffic lights, you know, the ones hanging on a rotten 4x4, that say stop if needed. Al
